Esistono sette diverse versioni di questa canzone. La prima versione fu incisa nel 1998 su Whisper EP. Tale versione ha la particolarità di contenere nell'introduzione, composta da una serie di note di chitarra, una citazione del film "My World Dies Screaming", anche conosciuto come "Terror in the Haunted House" (1958), lo stesso film da cui sono state prese le frasi citate poi in Understanding.

"Whisper" fu in seguito pubblicata come singolo di apertura del demo album degli Evanescence, Origin, dove David Hodges canta le parti in sottofondo. Fu il singolo più richiesto per più di due settimane alla stazione radio di KLEC "Lick" 106.3 FM.

La terza versione demo di Whisper contiene degli estratti dalla colonna sonora di William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Questi sono "Death Scene" e "O Verona". Qualche versione leggermente diversa di questa demo può essere trovata in internet e in molti cd di bootleg (vedi Fake). Una di queste ha un "esplosione" di rumore prima del coro dell'introduzione (a circa 0:29 minuti),; un'altra non possiede questo suono, ma ha un andamento "a scatti" che appare dopo i 0:30 minuti.

La versione inserita sulla compilation We The Living Vol. 3 è uguale alla versione di Sound Asleep EP senza l'introduzione invertita e senza la clip del film. Contiene inoltre un introduzione alla batteria abbastanza lunga. La versione demo Post-Sound Asleep è uguale a quella inserita nella compilation We The Living, senza però l'introduzione alla batteria. Nella versione Automata Magazine 3.0 sono state unite le canzoni di "Whisper" (Origin version) e "Origin" in una sola traccia.

Nella versione contenuta in Fallen, alla fine si può sentire "Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum", che, con qualche errore, è la traduzione in latino di "Salvaci dal pericolo, salvaci dal cattivo".

Durante un intervista di EvClub composta dalle domande dei fan è saltata fuori questa domanda:

Fan: "Ti senti ancora legata alle canzoni scritte diversi anni fa?" Amy: "Whisper è qualche cosa che suoniamo molto sul palco ed amo farla, è una grande canzone dal vivo. Ma dal punto di vista del testo non contiene più un gran significato per me perché adesso non mi trovo affatto in un periodo buio della mia vita. Sto attraversando un periodo abbastanza positivo. Così, a meno che non sia veramente arrabbiata, non mi sento totalmente legata a Whisper."
