La nona traccia dell'omonimo album degli Evanescence.

Il 4 ottobre è stato reso disponibile l'ascolto e il testo ufficiale in anteprima assoluta sul sito ufficiale per promuovere la pre-ordinazione del nuovo album. L'unica traccia dell'album Evanescence a non essere mai stata eseguita dal vivo. Amy ha dichiarato infatti che la canzone è "quasi impossibile da cantare" (non per l'altezza delle note ma per la loro durata) e che inserirla in scaletta comporterebbe l'eliminazione di diverse altre canzoni della setlist.

In un'intervista traccia-per-traccia con NME.com, Amy ha detto:

The End Of The Dream riguarda la vita e la fine del sogno è la morte. Parla del viaggio verso la morte e del ricorrente tema del non aver paura e di vivere mentre sei vivo perchè non dura per sempre. Credo che sia qualcosa che si trova spesso nella nostra musica perché è qualcosa che sento profondamente. Però è divertente perché lo dico sempre a me stessa. Non è come quando impari qualcosa e dici “sì, è così”... Devi fare un grande sforzo per ricordare a te stesso ciò in cui credi. Per cui mi sento così, il tema della non paura e la vita non dura per sempre... viene fuori spesso. E sì, la canzone parla di questo!

In un'altra intervista ha rivelato qualche cosa in più sulla sua genesi:

I'm remembering a moment walking through a cemetery, actually, and just thinking and feeling. And that song came out of the beauty and the pain and the strength that comes out of not being afraid. The point of the song really is, it's worth it to feel. It's worth it to hurt, rather than to be numb. I know I've sung about that before in different ways, but I think in that song it takes it to a more personal place, and I love that about it.
