General information

Written by: A. Lee

Good Enough is the thirteenth track and the fourth and final single from Evanescence's second studio album, The Open Door.

The song is described as "a string-and-choir-infused closer distinguished as the band's first truly (almost) contented song" by Evanescence.com.[1] It is decidedly upbeat and showcases an Amy Lee that is letting someone in and who sounds happily in love. She thinks it is the bravest track on the album.[2] She called it "her happy song."[3]

Amy's various descriptions of the song:

Vin1.jpg It's totally scary to be so vulnerable when I know however many metalheads are going to diss it because it's not the exact same thing [as the other songs]. And it doesn't end with, 'And then he died' or 'I pushed him off a cliff' or 'He’s a ghost really.' It's so cool to me and weird to me. I've never written a happy song, ever.[4] Vin2.jpg

Vin1.jpg I had gone through a lot of difficult things during the writing of the whole album, and by the end of it, I had stepped away from those bad situations. That's really hard. You have to be really brave and strong about it. After doing that, I felt so amazing. For the first time I felt like I could write a song based on how good I felt. I have never done that before ever.[5] Vin2.jpg

Vin1.jpg I think Good Enough is the most inspirational, good feeling, non-Goth song you'll ever hear, but there are people who can't get past their initial perception of our music.[6] Vin2.jpg

Vin1.jpg I think "Good Enough" is the best representation of the new me and it was the last song written for the album, written at the very, very end of the writing process. Actually, we were already in the studio recording and we thought we had all the songs and then that song came out of me. I guess by then, I'd gotten so much out of my system, that I needed to sing, that I needed to write about. I actually had made real changes in my life to separate myself from the negative things that were holding me down. After all the fighting and all the struggle and all the stuff, it was like this calm after the storm and I felt really, really good, better than I felt since maybe my childhood.

"Good Enough" actually came out of feeling good, which is a big first for me because I've always felt like I have to be going through something, struggling with something, to write. Passionate, tragic things inspire my music, but I've realized that I don't have to be sad to write a good song because "Good Enough" I think is a wonderful song. It makes me happy to hear it and it's really funny because for one thing, there are no guitars on it, but for another thing, it's sweet and it's admittedly Terry and John's favorite song on the album. I'm glad I did that.[7]

Vin2.jpg

Vin1.jpg "Not only am I a woman, but I'm also very young, and the one thing I'm constantly having to prove is that I'm an artist and not just a singer with some genius behind me," Lee says. "I'm really good at what I do. And I'm the leader of this band. There's a reason I put the song Good Enough at the end of the record. It's the theme of the album and the theme of this life."[8] Vin2.jpg

Vin1.jpg ‘Good Enough’ does find me at peace, and I’m kind of scared of it. It’s weird, it was the bravest song to write and to bring to the table when we were recording the album. It’s just really real, and it was saying what I felt, that for once I wasn’t miserable, or stuck or trapped or sad or grieving. It was happy and well I wrote a happy song. I thought the guys (in the band) were probably going to hate it, and they loved it. It’s cool that ‘Good Enough’ is the last song on the album, because it’s all the things that I went through, and it’s the point that I got to.[9] Vin2.jpg

Amy pointed out that Good Enough was put at the end of the album to symbolize a new beginning in her life:

Vin1.jpg That song -- the last one I wrote for the record -- is definitely the most representative of me now, the way that I feel. If we're talking about the 'new me,' that's it and why it's at the end of the record. You have to go through those things and make the changes you have to make and be there and go, 'Okay, I did it.' It doesn't come that easy.[10] Vin2.jpg

The song was inspired by Josh Hartzler, Amy's then boyfriend and current husband (also the inspiration behind Bring Me to Life).[11][12] She wrote it two weeks after running into him at a party, then she played it for him and felt more nervous than playing in front of an audience.[13] The music video was recorded June 11-14, 2007 in Budapest, Hungary.

The song's instrumental intro was written for the soundtrack of the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, but was not included.[14] Amy claimed she was paid to write the song.[15][16] However, the producers of Narnia rebutted her claim, stating that no Evanescence music had been planned for inclusion in the soundtrack.[17] The intro was included into the song on The Open Door.[14]

The song was added to the setlist of The Open Door Tour (2006-07).[18][19][20][21] It was later played again at the band's Secret Show in NYC on November 4, 2009,[22][23] and at their show in Nashville on August 17, 2011.[24] It was also played acoustically at the Legends & Lyrics show in February 2009.[25]

On the Synthesis listening party in New York on October 3, 2017, Amy made an acoustic performance of Good Enough, in celebration of The Open Door's eleventh anniversary. Watch here.

Lyrics

Studio, live and acoustic versions

Under your spell again
I can't say no to you
Crave my heart and it's bleeding in your hand
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't have let you torture me so sweetly
Now I can't let go of this dream
I can't breathe but I feel

Good enough
I feel good enough for you

Drink up sweet decadence
I can't say no to you
And I've completely lost myself
and I don't mind
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't have let you
conquer me completely
Now I can't let go of this dream
Can't believe that I feel
Good enough

I feel good enough
It's been such a long time coming,
but I feel good

And I'm still waiting for the rain to fall
Pour real life down on me
Cause I can't hold on to anything this
Good enough
Am I good enough
for you to love me too?

So take care what you ask of me
Cause I can't say no

US radio edit and shorter acoustic version

Under your spell again
I can't say no to you
Crave my heart and it's bleeding in your hand
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't have let you torture me so sweetly
Now I can't let go of this dream
I can't breathe but I feel
Good enough
I feel good enough for you

Drink up sweet decadence
I can't say no to you
And I've completely lost myself and I don't mind
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't have let you conquer me completely
Now I can't let go of this dream
Can't believe that I feel
Good enough
I feel good enough
It's been such a long time coming, but I feel good

And I'm still waiting for the rain to fall
Pour real life down on me
'Cause I can't hold on to anything this
Good enough
Am I good enough for you to love me too?

Video

The video for "Good Enough" was recorded between July 11 and July 14, 2007 on Vaci utca (Vaci street) in Budapest, Hungary. Vaci utca is the most famous street in central Budapest. It was directed by Mark Webb and Rich Lee, and produced by DNA.[26]

On July 30, 2007, an unfinished version of the video was leaked on the Internet. That version had the unedited special effects replaced by descriptions on the screen.

The official version of the video debuted during MTV's TRL on September 10, with Amy Lee presenting the video, as it was announced at Evanescence.com.[27]

A day before its official debut, the final version of the video in a wider ratio was leaked on YouTube.

The video can be watched on YouTube.com.
