Broken Pieces Shine is the second track from Evanescence's fifth studio album, The Bitter Truth. The song was conceived by Amy Lee and Jen Majura during a spot of grocery shopping in Canada in 2019, as explained by Amy on her Kerrang! cover story in March 2021:[1]
This song was heard in Amy Lee's CBS This Morning interview on August 26, 2020 when it showed her working on Pro Tools in her home studio.[2]
"I think something that I've learned over time with our fans is that our music represents a free place to allow yourself to fall apart. ['Broken Pieces Shine'] is a celebration of that. It's about allowing all the parts of yourself to shine, and remembering and embracing the parts of your life that have been hard so that we can truly appreciate the beauty and not lose the things that we've learned."[3] |
In an interview with Loudwire, Amy explained the first line of the song:
"It's like I see somebody face-down on the ground standing back up again and dusting off, clawing back up and then starting to walk forward and refuse to just lay there and die."[4] |
On July 14, 2021, the band released a live performance on YouTube. Watch it here.

Lyrics
Three, two, one, zero
There is no way back this time
What is real and what is mine?
Oh, survival hurts
Lose myself or lose my mind
Every time I close my eyes
Oh, survival hurts
But I keep breathing in
I'm alive
I'm not fine
I don't know if I will be alright
But I have to try
I know you're with me, so what if we do fall apart?
Give into all that we are
And let all the broken pieces shine (Shine, shine, shine...)
Shuttered inside, looking out
Everything's turned upside down
Oh, we're not the first
How can we ever be us?
Wondering who we can trust
Oh, survival hurts
But I'm not giving in
I'm alive
I'm not fine
I don't know if I will be alright
But I have to try
I know you're with me, so what if we do fall apart?
Give into all that we are
And let all the broken pieces come alive
I don't know if I will ever be alright
But I have to try...
And I know you're with me
So what if we do fall apart?
Shamelessly be who we are
And let all the broken pieces shine
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (I'm alive)
Let all the broken pieces shine
Let all the broken pieces shine
Let all the broken pieces shine
Let all the broken pieces shine
Let all the broken pieces... shine
The Bitter Truth Evolution demo
Going out of time
Can you still hear me?
Or is this in my mind?
I need you near me
I can't get you out of my head
Still singing songs for the dead
Baby, 'cause broken champs still shine
Let all the bro-, let all the broken pieces shine
Let all the broken pieces shine
