Sick is eighth track from Evanescence's third studio album, Evanescence. It was performed live for the first time at the 2011 Rock in Rio festival on October 2.[1] It was added to the set-list to support Evanescence in 2011-12,[2][3] but it was pulled from the set-list three months before the tour ended.
In a track-by-track interview with NME, Amy said about the song:
Sick, okay, this is the song that was one of the first one we came up with when we had like a band jam session, about a year ago. And I don't know, we were really excited about it right away. Sometimes you get in a room with a group of people and try to write a song together and it just doesn't work. The more brains you get going, sometimes the more disjointed it becomes and the more directions start getting pulled apart.
This was a really cool moment because I felt like we discovered that we were on the same page. And as this line-up, this band we really can write together that way. And that was really exciting for me because again that's not what I'm used to and that's not what I've done the most in my life. For this band, it's usually been very private, kinda one on one, or alone kind of thing. Mostly one-on-one with somebody, I'm not writing those guitar parts or anything. Anyway. So, when we wrote Sick it was like an experiment that we didn't know if it would work or not. And I remember we were all just really excited at the end of it because we love that song. But it was just, for me I think of it like that was the moment when we were like, 'Yeah, we can do this, it's gonna be fun'.[4] |
Amy further explained the meaning of the song in a fan Q&A session:
Honestly, it was at a time I was sort of like frustrated creatively and in a place where I seriously felt misunderstood by the record label and everybody. And I was just really like "I'm sick of this!" so that was what I was singing about, yeah (laughs).[5] |
In a magazine interview in late 2011, she said:
That was the first one we wrote with Will, our drummer. It was the first time we had really gotten together as a band to write. You never know if that is going to work, and it totally worked. We were able to get in a room, and jam. I remember when we came up with that song, we were in a recording studio in Orlando, and as soon as we finished it, we put a demo together. We were listening to it in our car yelling "Heck Yeah, We're Back! We're Doing This!"[6] |
The song's handwritten lyrics that can be seen on The Ultimate Collection Book contain crossed out lyrics: Someday the rouse will care in, which was changed to Someday the light will break through.

Lyrics
Embrace the silence
Cause there’s nothing that can change the way I feel
Taken all that you wanted
Now there’s nothing that can change the way I feel
Hold on, little girl
The end is soon to come
Sick of it all
Sick of it all
We will not follow
Sick of it all
Sick of it all
They don't understand how
Sick we are
Sick we are
Of this bottomless pit of lies
Behind closed eyes
Oceans between us
And there’s nothing that can change the way I feel
I can still taste the poison
Of every thought, every breath I wasted here
Hold on, little girl
The end is soon to come
Sick of it all
Sick of it all
We will not follow
Sick of it all
Sick of it all
They don't understand how
Sick we are
Sick we are
Of this bottomless pit of lies
Behind closed eyes
Someday you’ll know the pain
Someday the light will break through
And nothing you tell yourself
Will save us from the truth
Screaming out
Sick of it all
Sick of it all
We will not follow
Sick of it all
Sick of it all
They don't understand how
Sick we are
Sick we are
Of this bottomless pit of lies
Behind closed eyes
