Whisper is the twelfth track from Evanescence's debut album, Fallen.
It was originally recorded on Amy and Ben's Sound Asleep EP in 1999. It's one of the first songs Amy Lee and Ben Moody wrote as Evanescence.[1]
At the beginning of the song on the Sound Asleep EP, there is an introduction which is actually a part of the song itself played backward that culminates in a sound clip from the movie My World Dies Screaming, also known as Terror in the Haunted House (1958), the same film some clips on Understanding are taken from.
The post-Origin demo of Whisper contains sound clips from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. This version begins with a sample intro from "Death Scene" and "O Verona" and includes backup vocals by David Hodges on the chorus. There are a few versions of the song floating around the internet and various bootleg discs (see Fake). One version has a burst of noise before the vocals in the intro sample (at approximately 0:29). Another version does not have this burst of noise, but has distinct 'skipping' sounds that appear after the 0:30 mark.
Whisper received local radio play in Little Rock. It was the #1 most requested new single for more than two weeks on the radio station KLEC "Lick" 106.3 FM.[2]
The We The Living Vol. 3 version is the Sound Asleep EP version without the reversed intro and sound clip from the movie. It also has an extended drum outro. The Post-Sound Asleep demo is mostly the same as the We The Living version, only without the extended drum outro.
The Automata Magazine 3.0 version is the Origin version of Whisper and the song "Origin" merged into one track.
In pre-releases of the demo on Origin, Origin and Whisper are separate tracks but there is no gap of silence between track 1 and 2, almost appear merged as the same track.
In the Fallen version, at the end the choir sings "Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum," which is roughly translated from Latin as "Save us from danger, save us from evil". As with all the other choir parts throughout the album, the choir on "Whisper" was written and arranged by Amy. The Millenium Choir performed the vocals, and it was recorded at NRG Studios in North Hollywood. The same choir voiced the rest of Fallen, and later Lacrymosa on The Open Door.[3]
While answering questions from fans in an EvClub interview, a question comes up that asks "Can you still relate to the songs you wrote years ago?" Amy's response about this song is:

Whisper is something that we still play on stage a lot and I love playing it, it's a great live song. But lyrically it doesn't hold a ton of meaning for me anymore 'cause I'm not really at a very dark place in my life at all right now. I'm at a pretty positive place. So unless I'm really angry, I don't totally relate to Whisper. |
