General information

Written by: A. Lee, T. Balsamo, T. McCord, T. McLawhorn, W. Hunt and W. B. Hunt

Made of Stone is the second track from Evanescence's third studio album, Evanescence. It is one of the songs that got reworked from the 2010 Lillywhite sessions (along with Swimming Home and Secret Door).[1] The piano solo featured during the middle eight is the same song Amy played in the "Meanwhile... in the studio" video she posted on her Twitter account on May 11, 2011.[2] The title of the song was first revealed in a video on MTV News in which it's seen on the song board in the studio.[3] Prior to the album's release, Made of Stone was previewed on Evanescence.com during mid-September.[4]

In an interview in July 2011, Amy said that the song was composed two years ago, meaning 2009.[5] Amy said in another interview that she wrote the song with her programmer friend, Will "Science" Hunt. She said they were writing a few songs together when hanging out, and she stated that the original version of the song was very electronic and very different, because when she writes demos and records demos at her house, there's no guitars, and it's "all sorts" of "sound and keyboards and stuff." And after having the song for a year and a half, the band came into it, and it gave the song a "huge power." She said it changed a lot from its original version, and she thinks that the song is very strong and confident.[6]

In a track-by-track interview with NME, Amy Lee talked about the song saying:

Vin1.jpg This is one of the oldest songs, this is something that was from that sort of more electronic phase that I was going through, a couple years ago. I love this one, I feel like it's strong and defiant and badass and it only got better when the band started really being involved in it and writing that guitar part and everything about it. I feel like it popped up in a big way when the guys got involved. But I've always loved that one, I think it has a very cool, dark, sexy quality.[7] Vin2.jpg

When answering fan questions from Twitter, Amy said that Made of Stone is one of the oldest songs on the record, and that the most work went into it, because it went through many phases:

Vin1.jpg Made of Stone is the second track on the album, and I think it's definitely one of the oldest ones that we have. I don't know if I'd say it was a challenge to make, but I think the most work maybe went into it, just because it went through so many different phases. At first, it was a very different style song, with no guitars and a lot of programming and interesting stuff and, yeah, went through a couple of different phases, worked on it with the band and the guys came up with some amazing guitar and drum and bass work and it turned into this completely other thing, and I think it's pretty cool now, I think it finally found its home where it is, so, yeah.[8] Vin2.jpg

In a track-by-track interview on Evanescence's deluxe edition bonus DVD, Amy explained the meaning of the song and how it was started in the initial, electronic-leaning sessions for the album:

Vin1.jpg I had that one from the first time we went into the studio for a minute, a year ago. It was part of that batch of songs that was really in a different direction before. And then bringing the band into it and making it more of this full rock song. Wow, it really jumped it up to a new level, sort of like the way I've always wanted it to be.

The song is strong, it's about strength. It's not completely literal 'cause obviously you can't numb yourself until you're made of stone. It's kind of saying, "I'll take it beyond this, I'm gonna have to make myself harder."[9]

Made of Stone was played live for the first time at Rock in Rio, Brazil on October 2, 2011.[10] It was added to the set-list of the Evanescence Tour (2011-12).[11][12][13]

The song was remixed by Renholdër with the assistance of Amy Lee for the Underworld: Awakening soundtrack, released on January 17, 2012.[14][15] It played in the closing credits.

Lyrics

Speak your mind
like I care (care)
I can see your lips moving
I've just learned not to hear (hear)
Don't waste your time

It's never enough for you, baby (Never enough for you, baby)
Don't want to play your game (Don’t want to play your, oooo oooo oooo) anymore (anymore; never enough for you, baby)
no matter what you say (no matter what you say)
I'm all out of love for you, baby (I'm all out of love for you, baby)
and now that I've tried everything (I've tried everything)
I'll numb the pain till I am made of stone (till I am made of stone)

Take your time (time)
I'm not scared (scared)
Make me everything you need me to be (everything you need me to be)
so the judgement seems fair (so the judgement seems fair)
Don't waste your time (time)

It's never enough for you, baby (never enough for you, baby)
Don't want to play your game (Don’t want to play your, oooo oooo oooo) anymore (anymore; never enough for you, baby)
no matter what you say (no matter what you say)
I'm all out of love for you, baby (I'm all out of love for you, baby)
and now that I've tried everything (I've tried everything)
I'll numb the pain till I am made

to tear out my heart
for the way that it feels
I will still remember when you've long (remember when you’ve long) forgotten me (forgotten me)

It's never enough for you, baby (never enough for you, baby)
Don't want to play your game (Don’t want to play your, oooo oooo oooo) anymore (anymore; never enough for you, baby)
no matter what you say (no matter what you say)
I'm all out of love for you, baby (I’m all out of love for you, baby; OOOOOOOOOO)
and now that I've tried everything (I've tried everything)
I'll numb the pain till I am made of stone

It's never enough (I'm not gonna play)
It's never enough (a game)
It's never enough
I'll numb the pain till I am made of stone (Haaaaah aaaahhhhhh)
I'll numb the pain till I am made of stone (stone)

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 This version is electronic, with synths and programming. The Renholdër remix may be similar to this version, as Amy helped to remix it. According to her, songs recorded in the Lillywhite sessions are unfinished because recordings were abruptly suspended at her label's behest.
  2. Amy said she helped to remix the song.
  3. It starts with a synthesizer and Moog keyboard intro.
  4. It doesn't have the synth/Moog intro.
  5. Thanks to AeternusAmatorius from EvThreads.proboards.com for deciphering the backing vocals and putting them together with the time frames.
