General information
Written by: A. Lee, B. Moody and D. Hodges
Hello is the ninth track from Evanescence's debut album, Fallen. The song was originally developed during the 2001-2002 demo sessions and is one of the most personal songs on the album. It's the only Fallen song that has never been performed live to date, despite consideration back in 2003 by Amy shortly after it was released.[1] However, a theme from the song was used in the beginning of a few live shows in 2003 as the intro to "Going Under". There is also a video of Amy singing it in her parents' house in 2004, which is the only recorded live version of the song.[2]
This is one of the songs on Fallen that Amy is proud of. "Lyrically, I think that's my favourite thing on Fallen because it relates specifically to one personal instance that is very, very special to me and very close to me, so I think Hello is probably the one song of ours that can actually make me cry."[3]
The song is about one of Amy's sisters, who passed away in 1987 at the age of three from an unidentified illness (this sister's name is known, but is not provided out of respect).[4]
This sister was later the inspiration for a second song, "Like You", on The Open Door.[5]
A piece of the song played in a different key was used on the piano solo The In-Between from the band's orchestral album, Synthesis.

Lyrics
Playground school bell rings again
Rain clouds come to play again
Has no one told you she's not breathing?
Hello I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to
Hello
If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream
Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken
Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide
Don't cry
Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping
Hello I'm still here
All that's left of yesterday

Notes
- ↑ This version was used as an intro in most of the 2003 live sets. This version featured only the cello solo of the bridge, mixed with a synthesizer sound on the background. The whole intro was a blend of parts of "Hello", "Imaginary", "Tourniquet" and "Whisper".
