The Post-Origin demo of "Whisper" contains sound clips from the William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. This version begins with a sample intro from "Death Scene" and "O Verona" and includes backing vocals by David Hodges on the chorus. There are a few versions of the song floating around the internet and various bootleg discs (see Fake). One version has a burst of noise before the vocals in the intro sample (at approximately 0:29). Another version does not have this burst of noise, but has distinct 'skipping' sounds that appear after the 0:30 mark.
At the beginning of the version on the Sound Asleep EP, there is an introduction which is actually a part of the song itself played backward that culminates in a sound clip from the movie My World Dies Screaming, also known as Terror in the Haunted House (1958), the same film some clips on Understanding are taken from.
"Whisper" was later released as the lead single from Evanescence's first demo album, Origin, where David Hodges sings backup vocals. It was the #1 most requested new single for more than two weeks on the radio station KLEC "Lick" 106.3 FM.[1]
The We The Living Vol. 3 version is the Sound Asleep EP version without the reversed intro and sound clip from the movie. It also has an extended drum outro. The Post-Sound Asleep demo is mostly the same as the We The Living version, only without the extended drum outro.
The Automata Magazine 3.0 version is the Origin version of "Whisper" and the song "Origin" merged into one track.
Pre-Release's of Origin's "Whisper", "Origin" and "Whisper" are separate tracks but there is no gap of silence between track 1 and 2, almost appeared merged as the same track.
In the Fallen version, at the ending the choir sings "Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum," which is roughly translated from Latin as "Save us from danger, save us from evil". Although not properly credited, the vocals were sung by the Millenium Choir, and recorded at NRG Studios in North Hollywood. The same choir voiced the rest of Fallen, and later Lacrymosa on The Open Door.[2]

Whisper is something that we still play on stage a lot and I love playing it, it's a great live song. But lyrically it doesn't hold a ton of meaning for me anymore 'cause I'm not really at a very dark place in my life at all right now. I'm at a pretty positive place. So unless I'm really angry, I don't totally relate to Whisper. |
