General Information

Originally recorded on the Sound Asleep EP in 1998. There are currently seven versions of this song available. The Post-Origin Demo of Whisper contains sound clips from the William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. This version begins with a sample intro from "Death Scene" and "O Verona."[1] There are a few versions of the song floating around the internet and various bootleg discs (see Fake). One version has a burst of noise before the vocals in the intro sample (at approximately 0:29). Another version does not have this burst of noise, but has distinct 'skipping' sounds that appear after the 0:30 mark.
At the beginning of the version on the Sound Asleep EP, there is an introduction which is actually a part of the song itself played backward that culminates in a sound clip from the movie My World Dies Screaming, also known as "Terror in the Haunted House" (1958),[2] the same film some clips on Understanding are taken from.
In the chorus of the Origin version, David sings backup vocals.
The We The Living Vol. 3 Version is the Whisper/Sound Asleep EP version without the reversed intro and sound clip from the movie. It also has an extended drum outro. The Post-Sound Asleep Demo is mostly the same as the We The Living version, only without the extended drum outro. This is presumably the version Amy and Ben tried to get on the We The Living Vol. 3 CD (and they couldn't keep the copyrighted intro), but they later decided to add the extended drum outro.
The Automata Magazine 3.0 Version is the Origin version of Whisper and the song Origin merged into one track.
In the Fallen version, at the ending the choir sings "Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum," which is roughly translated from Latin as "Save us from danger, save us from evil."
While answering questions from fans in an EvClub interview, a question comes up that asks "Can you still relate to the songs you wrote years ago?" Amy's response about this song is:

Whisper is something that we still play on stage a lot and I love playing it, it's a great live song. But lyrically it doesn't hold a ton of meaning for me anymore 'cause I'm not really at a very dark place in my life at all right now. I'm at a pretty positive place. So unless I'm really angry, I don't totally relate to Whisper.[3] |
