General information
Written by: A. Lee
Together Again is a song written by Amy Lee in 2004. It's an outtake from Evanescence's second studio album, The Open Door.
Amy stated during an interview with MTV News in November 2004 that she was working on music for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.[1] The song was scrapped from the movie for being "too dark".[2][3] According to the producers of the movie, however, "no Evanescence music was planned for the soundtrack".[4]
Amy confirmed on EvBoard:
PS- about all this Narnia crap- nothing was sliced, diced or sacrificed. The song I wrote for the movie is still intact- when I wrote it, I wrote a really long instrumental intro that is different from the rest of the song. It's just a piece of music. It turned out to be the perfect segway into the last song on the album.[5] |
Amy confirmed in an interview with EvanescenceVille that Together Again is The Narnia Song and was inspired by the movie. She says the song is about "leaving home knowing it may not be there when you return, and the attraction to something frightening and wonderful far away from there".[6] In the interview, she also said that the song remained unfinished as of then, but that it would be released someday.[6]
In a Metal Edge magazine interview, Amy said this about the song:
I wrote something else that was moody, dark and really cool, and the director wanted something that felt more hopeful. The song was about saying goodbye and moving on, and that’s what they’re doing in [the beginning of] the movie when they’re leaving their parents and going into some scary, unknown place. That’s how I wrote it, from their perspective. I thought the song was perfect. And it wasn’t like I put a bunch of guitars in it. I made stuff that was cool and vibey but was still haunting, and I think that’s the part they didn’t like.[7] |
In a 2007 interview, she said she was told by the film's producers that the film was going to be dark, "very Lord of the Rings", but it ended up being a children's movie.[8] "They wanted to not scare kids, and I can understand that now after seeing the movie. [...] The way I was writing was a lot bigger and more epic and dark than all that. I still think it would have been a beautiful song in the movie, but it didn't make me bitter."[8]
There was speculation that the song was going to be released as a B-side on the Good Enough Maxi single, but this turned out to be false.[6] Amy said that it was probably a mistake by the label, and that she was saving it for a rainy day.[6]
On January 22, 2010, Amy announced on her Twitter account that the song was going to be released to support the Haiti earthquake - "Today @Evanescence is releasing a new song, Together Again, and the proceeds are going to help Haiti! Details to follow!".[9] If you were to donate five dollars or more, you would receive this song.[10]
On EvClub Amy explained the reason for releasing the song:[11]
In September 2012, a promo CD containing this track [along with The Last Song I'm Wasting on You, If You Don't Mind, and four instrumentals (Instrumental 1, Instrumental 2, Instrumental 3 and Instrumental 4)] was put up for sale on eBay.[12] The Together Again version on the CD had a longer intro than the final version, this version is presumably a pre-master.[note 1] The seller of the promo was asked by Amy's manager to withdraw the CD from sale, and the seller complied. This version of Together Again was fully leaked in March 2014.
On February 10, 2018, Together Again was played live for the first time for the Synthesis Live shows in Australia and Europe.[13] It was performed instrumentally by the orchestra, with strings arranged by David Campbell.[14]

Lyrics
Never thought that I'd be leaving you today
So alone and wondering why I feel this way
So wide the world
Can love remember how to get me home to you
Someday
We'll be together again
All just a dream in the end
We'll be together again
So many fears were swimming around and around in my mind
Who would have dreamed the secrets we would find
I've found a world where love and dreams and darkness all collide
Maybe this time we can leave our broken world behind
We'll be together again
All just a dream in the end
