Written by: A. Lee, B. Moody, and D. Hodges
Going Under is the first track and second single from Evanescence's debut album, Fallen. It was the last song written for album. Amy wrote it about a relationship with an abusive boyfriend, which also inspired other songs on Fallen, but it can be used to describe any type of abusive relationship. Lee said the song is about emerging from a "bad" relationship, explaining, "And when you're at the end of your rope, when you're at the point where you realize something has to change, that you can't go on living in the situation that you're in. It's cool. It's a very strong song."
Amy noted that the line "Don’t want your hand this time/I’ll save myself" can be perceived as her own personal declaration of independence:
| |||
In an interview with Spin in October 2006, Amy said:
| |||
Going Under is Amy's favorite song from Fallen. The song was performed throughout Evanescence's Fallen Tour (2003-04), The Open Door Tour (2006-07) and Evanescence Tour (2011-12).
Amy wanted the song to be the first single from Fallen, which would have been the world’s introduction to Evanescence, but their label opted for Bring Me to Life instead because the release of the Daredevil soundtrack prompted the decision.
| |||
In a Kerrang! cover story about the 20th anniversary of Fallen, Amy discussed the song:
Going Under is | | ||
The | The handwritten lyrics released as part of the Fallen scrapbook in 2013 feature crossed out lyrics on the second verse: "Spare me your insults / Deny me your (...)".
The voice notes included on Fallens 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set contain audio of Amy Lee working on the vocal melody of the song, as well as writing it on piano with alternate lyrics.

The video is a live-performance/action video and was directed by Philip Stölzl. The video was filmed in Berlin, Germany, but most of it was filmed in Los Angeles, California in May of 2003. It follows the band performing at what can be assumed is a concert in which they’re the headliners, Amy swimming and singing underwater, and Ben being questioned relentlessly by the media (the media’s constant questions about the band’s religious affiliation inspired that part in the video). Evil Dead, one of Ben’s favorite movies, inspires the use of the zombies in the videofact; normal people attending the gig transform into said zombies throughout the course of the video. The underwater scene was Amy's idea. She also designed two of the costumes she's wearing in the video. The crimson corset cost her $2,500, the biggest amount of money she’d ever spent on a piece of clothing. The other outfit had been stitched by Amy herself. "It's white and has a lot of shreds. It reminds me of something someone who died would wear." The idea of them came to her while she was nursing an illness in a hotel in Los Angeles.

General information
Written by: A. Lee, B. Moody, and D. Hodges
Going Under is the first track and second single from Evanescence's debut album, Fallen. It was the last song written for album.[1][2] Amy wrote it about a relationship with an abusive boyfriend, which also inspired other songs on Fallen,[3] but it can be used to describe any type of abusive relationship. Lee said the song is about emerging from a "bad" relationship, explaining, "And when you're at the end of your rope, when you're at the point where you realize something has to change, that you can't go on living in the situation that you're in. It's cool. It's a very strong song."[4]
Amy noted that the line "Don’t want your hand this time/I’ll save myself" can be perceived as her own personal declaration of independence:
“I was just getting to that point where I was starting to change when I wrote that,” she says, “and I remember loving that line. From then on, for months, that was my favorite song. It’s the one song that isn’t desperate and asking for help from somebody else. I hear the rest of those songs now, and I almost get angry. I’m like, I don’t want to be saved. I want to save myself.”[1] |
In an interview with Spin in October 2006, Amy said:[5]
Going Under is Amy's favorite song from Fallen.[6] The song was performed throughout Evanescence's Fallen Tour (2003-04),[7] The Open Door Tour (2006-07)[8][9] and Evanescence Tour (2011-12).[10][11][12]
Amy wanted the song to be the first single from Fallen, which would have been the world’s introduction to Evanescence, but their label opted for Bring Me to Life instead because the release of the Daredevil soundtrack prompted the decision.[13][14]
“That was the song that we really wanted,” admits Lee, reflecting on the song nearly 18 years after its release. “I love ‘Bring Me to Life’, obviously, but we had a great feeling about ‘Going Under’ being sent to radio before the album came out. When that didn’t happen, it kind of became like, ‘Okay, well at least when you hear the album, I want it to still be the first thing that you hear.’”
Amy acknowledges the song’s agency reflects both strength and vulnerability she experienced coming out of the relationship. “It presents a place that I kind of got to later. I’m calling out for help – ‘I’m going under/I’m drowning in you’ – but it starts out with me being like, ‘You know what? I’m done with this. I’m stepping out of the situation.’ I think that attitude was something for me that I was more excited to project.”[13] |
In a Kerrang! cover story about the 20th anniversary of Fallen, Amy discussed the song:
“A debut single really matters because that’s your first impression. I wanted Going Under to be our first single because it was strong, empowered and one of the most recent songs we had written. I was like, ‘This is my best work, this is the most honest I’ve been!’ I wanted people to hear me stand up and not be a victim. The lyrics don’t start off saying I’m drowning, they’re saying, ‘I don’t want your hand this time, I’ll save myself,’ and that was the statement I wanted. I don’t want to be the girl who needs to be saved by a guy. But of course, there’s still a struggle there, it’s a story with an arc. It’s not an interesting story if I have no problem (laughs).”[15] |
The handwritten lyrics released as part of the Fallen scrapbook in 2013 feature crossed out lyrics on the second verse: "Spare me your insults / Deny me your (...)".
The voice notes included on Fallen's 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set contain audio of Amy Lee working on the vocal melody of the song, as well as writing it on piano with alternate lyrics.

Lyrics
Fallen version
Now I will tell you what I've done for you
Fifty thousand tears I've cried
Screaming, deceiving and bleeding for you
And you still won't hear me
[going under]
Don't want your hand
This time I'll save myself
Maybe I'll wake up for once [wake up for once]
Not tormented daily defeated by you
Just when I thought I'd reached the bottom
I'm dying again
I'm going under [going under]
Drowning in you [drowning in you]
I'm falling forever [falling forever]
I've got to break through
I'm going under
Blurring and stirring the truth and the lies
[So I don't know what's real and what's not]
So I don't know what's real and what's not
[So I don't know what's real and what's not]
Always confusing the thoughts in my head
So I can't trust myself anymore
I'm dying again
I'm going under [going under]
Drowning in you [drowning in you]
I'm falling forever [falling forever]
I've got to break through
I'm
So go on and scream
Scream at me I'm so far away [so far away]
I won't be broken again [again]
I've got to breathe
I can't keep going under
I'm going under [going under]
Drowning in you [drowning in you]
I'm falling forever [falling forever]
I've got to break through
I'm going under [going under]
Going under [drowning in you]
I'm going under

Video
The video is a live-performance/action video and was directed by Philip Stölzl. The video was filmed in Berlin, Germany, but most of it was filmed in Los Angeles, California in May of 2003.[4] It follows the band performing at what can be assumed is a concert in which they’re the headliners, Amy swimming and singing underwater, and Ben being questioned relentlessly by the media (the media’s constant questions about the band’s religious affiliation inspired that part in the video). Evil Dead, one of Ben’s favorite movies, inspires the use of the zombies in the video[citation needed]; normal people attending the gig transform into said zombies throughout the course of the video. It reminds me of something someone who died would wear." The idea of them came to her while she was nursing an illness in a hotel in Los Angeles.[4]

In the light of Fallen's 10th anniversary in 2013, Amy published the sketch for the corset she wore on the music video:
