General Information

Written by: A. Lee and B. Moody

One of Evanescence’s earliest recorded songs. Released on the Evanescence EP in December 1998. It should be noted that Amy Lee plays the piano on this track as David Hodges didn’t join the band until 2000.

Amy from EvThreads:

...Its just hard because you're your own worst critic and I hear myself say "my black backpack stuffed with broken dreams" and want to shoot myself. I seriously can't listen to the verses to that song without squinting. But I don't deny that there was a magic in those early songs. Each one was so exciting to us, we were just learning that we had the ability to make our favorite music.[1]

Lyrics

My black backpack stuffed with broken dreams
Twenty bucks should get me through the week
Never said a word of discontentment
Thought it a thousand times but now
I'm leaving home

Here in the shadows
I'm safe, I'm free
I've nowhere else to go
But I cannot stay where I don't belong

Two months passed by and it's getting cold
I know I'm not lost, I'm just alone
But I won't cry, I won't give up, I can't go back now
Waking up is knowing who you really are

Here in the shadows
I'm safe, I'm free
I've nowhere else to go
But I cannot stay where I don't belong

In the shadows
I'm safe, I'm free
I've nowhere else to go
But I cannot stay here
Oh! Show me the shadow where true meaning lies
So much more dismay in empty eyes
