Secret Door is the sixteenth and final track from the deluxe edition of Evanescence's third studio album, Evanescence. It is one of the three songs that got reworked from the 2010 Lillywhite sessions (along with Made of Stone and Swimming Home)[1].
In an interview with Spin, Amy announced the name of three new songs included in the third album, among them is "Secret Door", a ballad played with the harp.[2]
On June 19, 2011, Amy posted a video on twitvid titled "...Secret Door..." in which she is playing a slow, calming piece on the harp.[3]
In a track-by-track interview on Evanescence's deluxe edition bonus DVD, Amy discussed the song:
I took harp lessons for half a year and they felt really good. And, you know, not that I can play a lot, I'm not an amazing harpist. But it's fun to be able to do.
Secret Door is the one song on the album that's really different. It's just harp and orchestra, basically. It's like when you're in a dream and there's this magical place and you wake up and you don't want to wake up and just like always trying to get back into that same dream. That was what it was inspired by.[4] |
In a Spotify fan interview on July 18, 2012, Amy revealed the inspiration behind "Secret Door":[5]
The song was included on the b-side album, Lost Whispers, for The Ultimate Collection LP set that was released on December 9, 2016.
Secret Door was confirmed to be reworked and included on the orchestral album, Synthesis, when the track list was revealed through the album's pre-order on September 15, 2017. This version was performed live for the first time on October 14, 2017 at the Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada for the Synthesis Live tour. Watch a performance of the song here.
Kirsten Copely, Amy's harp teacher, played the harp on the Synthesis reworking of the song.[6][7]

Lyrics
Turn out the lights
Feed the fire 'til my soul breaks free
My heart is high as the waves above me
Don't need to understand
Too lost to lose
Don't fight my tears 'cause they feel so good
And I, I will remember how to fly
Unlock the heavens in my mind
Follow my love back through the same secret door
Look past the end
It's a dream as it's always been
All life lives on if we've ever loved it
And I, I will remember how to fly
Unlock the heavens in my mind
Follow my love back through the same secret door
I, I will remember how to fly
Unlock the heavens in my mind
Follow my love back through the same secret door
