General information

Written by A. Lee and T. Balsamo

Lose Control is the ninth track from Evanescence's second studio album, The Open Door.

Amy's description of the song:

Vin1.jpg Terry uses a lot of delay and noises. His guitar playing is really creepy! He also uses a lot of half-step two chords, which I love. I felt like I wasn't really allowed to use stuff like that before, because Ben didn't like it. But songs like 'Lose Control' go from C to a C sharp, back and forth. I love those. It's that Portishead influence.[1] Vin2.jpg

Amy has said that the song is about wanting to be less apprehensive and more "loose", and wanting to not have so much responsibility.[2]

When asked about her commentary of The Open Door having "sensuality", she mentioned Lose Control as an example of that:

Vin1.jpg “The song ‘Lose Control’ is what I was thinking of when I said that before, but then again I hate to say that because I don’t want people to think the album is some R&B-like sexed-up pop thing: it’s so hard to describe. I think that just comes from the fact that I’ve grown up and I’m not so insecure. And I’m not afraid to express every emotion – including feeling worthy and feeling like a woman and feeling good about myself; not that the album’s all happy and poppy. There are elements of everything.”[3] Vin2.jpg

In May 2007, the band began to play instrumental parts of the song as an intro to Weight of the World. In October, the full song began to be played at concerts.[4][5]

Lyrics

You don't remember my name
I don't really care
Can we play the game your way?
Can I really lose control?

Just once in my life
I think it'd be nice
Just to lose control, just once
[With all the pretty flowers] in the dust

Mary had a lamb
His eyes black as coals
If we play very quiet, my lamb
Mary never has to know

Just once in my life
I think it'd be nice
Just to lose control, just once

If I cut you down to a thing I can use
I fear there'd be nothing good left of you

Just to lose control, just once
