Feeding the Dark is the fifth track from Evanescence's fifth studio album, The Bitter Truth. The piano featured on the bridge is the same Amy played in the clip the band posted on their Instagram stories on September 30, 2020. The song was originally worked on the Lillywhite sessions for Evanescence in 2010, but scrapped at their former label's behest along with the material recorded that year. A decade later, it was chosen to be reworked for The Bitter Truth.
Amy talked about the song and the other two Evanescence outtakes that made it to The Bitter Truth in an interview with a Argentinian journal:
Songs like "Yeah Right", "Feeding the Dark" and "Take Cover", we started working on while we were writing for the Evanescence album, but for some reason we didn't finish them, we didn't feel like they were ready. I would never have said this then because it broke my heart to have left them out of that album, but now I see that they had to wait because we wouldn't have been able to record them in this way at that time. This is something new. Those songs needed the band of the future to sound so good, they are heavier, I like them a lot.[1] |
The lyrics on the chorus are incorrect on the booklet, being listed as "Oh, you can't hide", whereas they are listed as they are sung on the album's handwritten journal included on the deluxe box set.
Feeding the Dark made its live debut in Athens, Greece on June 5, 2022.
