Taking Over Me is the eighth track from Evanescence's debut album, Fallen. It was originally recorded during the 2001-2002 demo sessions before being chosen for the album. It was written about Amy Lee's future husband, Josh Hartzler, as explained in her Kerrang! cover story about the 20th anniversary of Fallen:
“As with Bring Me To Life, I was writing that one about [Amy’s future husband] Josh kinda too, secretly. A lot of my lyrics have double meanings. There is the main meaning and then there’s the secret, sub-meaning for me. The main meaning was storytelling from the eyes of the stalker – with the line, ‘You don’t remember me, but I remember you.’ It was sort of the prequel to Snow White Queen [from 2006’s The Open Door]. But the underneath meaning was that I was having all these feelings for this guy that I couldn’t tell him about. Why tell one story when you can two? I do that so often!”[1] |
The band stopped performing this song during the start of The Open Door tour, but they played it again during the Family Values Tour in 2007. They also played the song at the NYC Secret Show[2] and the Maquinária Festival show in 2009.
The voice notes included on a cassette tape of Fallen's 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set contain audio of Amy Lee singing the lyric "I knew you loved me then". The cassette tape also includes a demo dated November 15, 2001.

Lyrics
Fallen and Fallen pre-master version
You don't remember me but I remember you
I lie awake and try so hard not to think of you
But who can decide what they dream?
And dream I do
[I believe] I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
[I believe] I have to be with you to live, to breathe
You're taking over me
Have you forgotten all I know
And all we had?
You saw me mourning my love for you
And touched my hand
I knew you loved me, then
[I believe] I believe in you [I believe in you]
I'll give up everything just to find you
[I believe] I have to be with you to live, to breathe
You're taking over me
I look in the mirror and see your face
If I look deep enough
So many things inside that are just like you are taking over
I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you to live, to breathe
You're taking over me
[I believe] I believe in you [I believe in you]
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you to live, to breathe
You're taking over me
Taking over me
You're taking over me
Taking over me
Taking over me
