General Information

Written by: A. Lee

This song was the second song Evanescence did for The Open Door following Snow White Queen. Terry Balsamo has said that it was one of his favorite tracks to work on.

Amy talks in more context about her sister's demise...

“When that happened, my whole perception of life changed,” Lee says. “It sounds stupid, but that was when I became an artist. The music is my attempt to heal myself. Things like that can destroy you, or you can get through it.”

Lee’s gray-blue eyes fill with tears. Her voice wobbles. The kids at the next table stop slurping their drinks. She says her name was Bonnie. Amy does not wish to speak anymore about the death, but will talk about anything else. But listen to the song "Like You" on The Open Door, and you feel the grief.

“My sister’s death taught me how short life can be, and it has driven me to achieve things,” Lee says. “I have a list of 50 things I want to achieve. Not necessarily in entertainment, just personal goals. Life’s fragility drives me on.”

It is this drive that forms the paradox at the heart of Evanescence. Where Lee’s lyrics are forlorn and stricken, she is remarkably dynamic, energetic and precociously self-possessed for a woman who is only 26 years old.

“I wanted to be an artist, but it turns out I have to be director and owner of Evanescence LLC too,” she says. “I can handle it.”

Thus far, she’s handled it well, by most accounts. But there have been some bumps along the way.

Lyrics

Stay low, soft, dark, and dreamless
Far beneath my nightmares and loneliness
I hate me for breathing without you
I don't want to feel anymore for you

Grieving for you
I'm not grieving for you
Nothing real love can't undo
And though I may have lost my way
All paths lead straight to you

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you

Halo, blinding wall between us
Melt away and leave us alone again
The humming, haunted somewhere out there
I believe our love can see us through in death

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you
There's room inside for two
And I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you

You're not alone
No matter what they told you
You're not alone
I'll be right beside you forevermore

I long to be like you sis
Lie cold in the ground like you did
There's room inside for two
And I'm not grieving for you
And as we lay in silent bliss
I know you remember me

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you
There's room inside for two
And I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you
