General information
Written by: A. Lee and B. Moody[1]
Lies is the ninth track from Evanescence's demo album, Origin.
Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice provided the guest male vocals and Stephanie Pierce provided the female backup vocals.[2]
Lies was aired on local Little Rock radio in the summer of 2000, before Origin was released.[3] The Blitz transmission, KABF 88.3 FM, had already aired several Evanescence songs.
In September 2019, a video of Evanescence performing back in January 1999 was uploaded by Nick Williams, being the earliest footage of Lies being performed live, one year prior to its release on Origin.[4]
On the pre-show Q&A of A Live Session From Rock Falcon Studio in 2020, Amy was asked if a new studio version of Lies would be released because she was digitizing her old cassette tapes with old demos:
That's a very old song, an early days song. I have been going through all my tapes and a bunch of old material, and I do think it would be cool to find an outlet to share some more of that old stuff ... I'm going through the process of converting all those tapes to digital so that they don't degrade anymore than they already have. I'm not going to share a new recording of Lies but maybe the old one.[5] |
On April 5, 2023, the band posted a TikTok video of Amy repairing an old, broken, unlabeled cassette containing an audio of Lies and a radio station taping.[6]

Lyrics
Origin version
Bound at every limb by my shackles of fear
Sealed with lies through so many tears
Lost from within, pursuing the end
I fight for the chance to be lied to again
You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above
They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me
But through my tears breaks a blinding light
Birthing a dawn to this endless night
Arms outstretched, awaiting me
An open embrace upon a bleeding tree
Rest in me and I'll comfort you
I have lived and I died for you
Abide in me and I vow to you
I will never forsake you
They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me
They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me
Rest in me, I'll comfort you
I have lived and died for you
Abide in me, I vow to you
I will never forsake you
They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me
Post-Origin demo
Bind [Bind] my limbs with fear [fear]
Choke me with tears [tears]
I won't die for you
You've [you've] been here before [before]
And come back for more [more]
But not this time
You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above
Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
I should have known all along it was all a lie
I should have known it was all a lie
Now [now] I know the truth [truth]
I'm through fearing you [you]
And I am free
You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above
Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
I should have known all along it was all a lie [lie]
I should have known it was all a lie
Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
I should have known all along it was all a lie [lie]
Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
[I should have known] I should have known it was all a lie
I should have known it was all a lie
