Breathe No More is an outtake from Fallen. It is a piano ballad that was originally meant to be on the album, but was scrapped. It was later released on the Elektra soundtrack on January 11th, 2005 and the b-side album, Lost Whispers on LP on December 9, 2016, then digitally on February 17, 2017. Amy Lee has sole writing credits to this song.[1]
"Breathe No More" is one that I wrote as we were recording the album and I recorded it and it just didn't make it, it's mellow... It's a rock record, whatever, but I would really like to have it make it on the next record. We have it recorded nicely, it's on Kazaa.com, you can check it out...[2] |
Amy, in late 2012, told a fan the inspiration behind the song at a meet and greet:
I wrote the song when I was in quite a dark place. I was in a toxic relationship that was destroying me, the song is really about how sometimes when you're in a toxic relationship you change yourself for the other person, but you start to hate yourself for it. You look in the mirror and hate the person you've become. That self loathing is one of the worst feelings in the world, because you just want the other person in the relationship to be happy but at the same time you don't want to lose yourself, the real you.[3] |

Lyrics
I've been looking in the mirror for so long
That I've come to believe my soul's on the other side
All the little pieces falling, shatter
Shards of me too sharp to put back together
Too small to matter
But big enough to cut me into so many little pieces
If I try to touch her
And I bleed
I bleed
And I breathe
I breathe no more
Take a breath and I try to draw from my spirit's well
Yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child
Oh! lie to me, convince me that I've been sick forever
And all of this will make sense when I get better
But I know the difference
Between myself and my reflection
I just can't help but to wonder
Which of us do you love?
So I bleed
I bleed
And I breathe
I breathe no-
Bleed
I bleed
And I breathe
I breathe
I breathe
I breathe no more
