Will "Science" Hunt

William Barry Hunt, also known as Will "Science" Hunt (not to be confused with Evanescence's drummer Will Hunt), is a producer and percussionist.[1][2][3] He has collaborated with Amy Lee on several projects. He produced "Sally's Song", co-wrote on Evanescence's third studio album Evanescence, produced Amy's children's album, Dream Too Much, and co-produced the band's fourth studio album, Synthesis. He has a studio in Fort Worth, Texas called Spaceway Productions.[4]

The first song "Science" co-wrote on was Evanescence's "Hi-Lo" in 2007, co-producing and programming on the song.[6] An early version of the song was originally intended for the band's then-untitled third album,[4] but it was later reworked and made the cut on the band's fourth studio album, Synthesis. It was conceived when they decided to write an original song after they worked on the remake of "Sally's Song."[3]

"Science" produced Amy Lee's cover of Sally's Song for the album Nightmare Revisited, and Halfway Down the Stairs for the album Muppets: The Green Album. He is credited for the drums in Sally's Song, and programming in both songs.[7]

In 2009 and early 2010, "Science" co-wrote on several tracks from Evanescence's third album, Evanescence, with Amy Lee in New York and Texas, and he co-produced the first version of the album with Steve Lillywhite.[2] Amy talked about "Science":

Vin1.jpg The sounds and influence he brings to the table — programming outer-space awesome sounds you can't even recognize. I went through a phase where I didn't know if it was solo time, or go write score music, or what. And then once we wrote together, I realized this is totally Evanescence.[2] Vin2.jpg

She said that they were going to do a "two-drummer thing. Basically Thing 1 and Thing 2 — we're gonna have figure out some kind of plan for just knowing who's who."[2] She also said in an interview with Spin that "the songwriting and sound is inspired by a lot of our mutual loves -- Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, and music with a lot of programming and sounds that feel larger than life."[4] In the same interview, when asked how did Amy get a second guy in the band called Will Hunt, she said this:

Vin1.jpg Well, part of getting back to Evanescence was the new Will Hunt. I met this Will -- I call him Will "Science" Hunt because he does a lot of programming and beats -- when we recorded "Sally's Song" for Nightmare Revisited.[4] Vin2.jpg

They spent all of 2009 writing songs and crafting a handful of already-recorded electronic programming for the band's third album,[8][2] but only five songs made the final cut on the album. The original Evanescence album he worked on with Amy in early 2010 was scrapped by Wind-up Records. However, Amy acquired the rights to the recordings when her contract ended in 2014 and revealed she plans to finish and release some of those songs in the future.[9]

The songs released on the self-titled album that he co-wrote on are Made of Stone, Sick, End of the Dream, Swimming Home and Secret Door.[10] Amy confirmed in a radio interview on August 2011 that Will "Science" was not a band member, he joined them in programming and co-wrote some songs:[4][11]

Vin1.jpg Interviewer: Do you have two guys in the band, same name?

Amy: No. Nope, that didn't happen.
Interviewer: Did you used to, didn't you have, like, Will Hunt and...?
Amy: Right, right. There was a minute, I worked and wrote with this other guy named, who is also named Will Hunt, not my drummer. So that got a little confusing. He's awesome. But, um, he's not in the band.
Interviewer: I didn't know if you had a thing, where, like, you only worked with people named Will Hunt or something...
Amy: *laughs* Yeah, that was really confusing for a minute. Yes, I know.[12]

In 2015, he was credited as a producer and performer on Amy's cover of Chris Izaak's Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing from Recover, Vol. 1. The song was originally submitted for the film The Cabin in the Woods, but was rejected by the directors. It was then intended to be included on Evanescence's third album produced by Lillywhite in 2010, but the band's label rejected the whole material recorded in those sessions.[9]

In 2016, he produced Amy's children's album, Dream Too Much.

Will "Science" and Amy collaborated again for the band's fourth studio album, Synthesis. He co-produced the album with her, as well as engineered and programmed it. He has co-writing credits on the songs Hi-Lo and Imperfection. He toured with the band on the Synthesis Live Tour performing synths and live programming. In 2017, he remixed Love Exists.[13]

In 2019, Will engineered Amy's vocals on Love Goes On and On off Lindsey Stirling's fifth studio album, Artemis.[14]

Will did additional programming on the band's fifth album, The Bitter Truth, co-writing on the songs Yeah Right, Feeding the Dark and Take Cover.[15] Early versions of these three songs were originally written during the third album sessions in 2010.[16]
