General information

Written by: A. Lee and T. Balsamo

New Way to Bleed (alternate legal title: A New Way to Bleed[1]) is the thirteenth track on the deluxe edition of Evanescence's third studio album, Evanescence.

On May 29, 2011, Terry posted a video on Twitter whilst the band were in the studio recording Evanescence where Amy sings a piece of an unreleased song, which was later confirmed to be New Way to Bleed.[2] The existence and title of this song was first revealed in an interview with MSN in August 2011.[3]

Amy said in a Rockline Radio interview on October 17, 2011 that the song is about the label "not getting what [the band] were doing".[4]

Evanescence played the song live for the first time on November 13, 2015 at the Marathon Music Works in Nashville, Tennessee. Jen Majura sang backing vocals.[5]

The song was later included on the b-side album, Lost Whispers, for The Ultimate Collection LP set that was released on December 9, 2016.

Lyrics

Serve your twisted enemy
So you might earn forgiveness
You know your whole world is waiting
So why can't you speak?

I feel it coming over me
I'm still a slave to these dreams
Is this the end of everything
Or just a new way to bleed?

So go and tell all your friends that I'm a failure underneath
If it makes you feel like a bigger man
But it's my, my heart, my life that you're calling a lie
I've played this game before
And I can't take anymore

I feel it coming over me
I'm still a slave to these dreams
Is this the end of everything?
Or just a new way to bleed?

By drifting far beyond the edge
Freedom, freedom, can't you feel the ground caving in?
Freedom, give us a reason to believe again

I feel it coming over me
I'm still a slave to these dreams
Is this the end of everything?
Or just a new way to bleed?

Notes

  1. This version has a piano in the middle eight instead of a harp, as heard in the "New Way to Bleed" snippet Terry uploaded on Twitter.
