Unraveling is the eighth track from Evanescence's fourth studio album, Synthesis. The track is labelled as being an "interlude", which means "a musical composition inserted between the parts of a longer composition". It was confirmed to be on Synthesis when the tracklist was revealed through the album's pre-order on September 15, 2017.

The song was performed live for the first time at the Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 14, 2017 for the Synthesis Live tour.

Information from the Synthesis Live tour program/songbook sheds light that this was the first song that was solely written for synthesis and inspired by Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

This is the first piece of music written specifically for Synthesis. It is inspired by the dream-like, upwards climbing in the middle section of the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.
