Contrary to popular belief, Amy Lee did not write this song as a joke.[1] The reason people thought Amy wrote this song as a joke is because Renée Gray (Rocky Gray's wife) commented on the song, saying:

In an interview with Spin, she hinted that the song was dedicated to Ben Moody.[2] In a later interview with Metal Edge, it was revealed that the song was a planned B-side.[3] It features Amy's solo, un-layered, vocals with a very simple piano track. Some very experimental vocal work is heard throughout this song. This is Evanescence's longest song title.
This was the first post-Fallen song that fans heard about. Its title was revealed in the April 2004 issue of Blender:

Two nights ago, she finished a new song during sound check in Auckland, New Zealand. The track is tentatively called 'The Last Song I'm Wasting on You.' She utters a giggly laugh. She won't say who it's about.[4] |

The song was released as a bonus track on iTunes when The Open Door album was released (the album had to be pre-ordered from the website) and was soon spread around the Internet. The song was also released as a B-side on the "Lithium" single.
