This list is regarding Evanescence's pre-Fallen material spanning from their start in 1995 until the release of their first commercial single, Bring Me to Life, in 2003.
We will also be touching briefly on some history and information revolving around these old tracks.

On February 24, 2003, in an interview, Amy and Ben gave their permission to download all pre-Fallen material after learning that their Origin album was selling on eBay for $250.00.

1995 to 1998

It is well known that in 1995 this is when Evanescence first got their start.
Ben Moody and Amy Lee met at church camp. Ben's story differs a bit from Amy's, but this is to be expected. Ben noticed Amy after she had been playing numerous songs on piano, but what caught his ear is when she played Meatloaf's I'd Do Anything for Love. Ben approached Amy and struck up a conversation and asked if she would like to start a band with him. Amy obliged.

Childish Intentions Demo Cassette

Under the name of Childish Intentions, Evanescence recorded three songs onto a cassette tape (posted to Ben Moody's Instagram, with the caption of "First. Demo. Ever.").

  1. Solitude
  2. Understanding
  3. Track 3

Evanescence First "Professional" Recording

Their first professional recording (as referred to on Amy's Twitter account), simply titled Evanescence, was a cassette with two confirmed tracks on it.

  1. Solitude
  2. Understanding

RIM v.beta

In July of 1998, a compilation disc was released called RIM v.beta.
Understanding was the track from Evanescence featured on this disc.

Evanescence EP (1998 EP)

In December 1998, Evanescence's very first and self-titled EP was "released" to friends and family as a support effort.

  1. Where Will You Go? (organ version)
  2. Solitude
  3. Imaginary (slower guitar version)
  4. Exodus
  5. So Close
  6. Understanding (7-minute goth-anthem organ version)
  7. The End

There were outtakes for this EP.

  1. Give Unto Me (piano/vocal version)
  2. Goodnight (later featured on the 2000 Blitz Locals compilation disc)
  3. My Immortal (piano chords version with extra lyrics)
  4. October
  5. Me & You (which some believe could be titled Me In You)

1999

Evanescence EP (1998 EP)

On January 2, 1999 the first EP was "officially" released with the help of Bigwig Enterprises.
See above December 1998 release.

Sound Asleep EP (Whisper EP/1999 EP)

In August 1999, the Sound Asleep EP was released.

  1. Give Unto Me (instrumental)
  2. Whisper
  3. Understanding (distorted guitars version; Ben loans some distorted vocals as well)
  4. Forgive Me
  5. Understanding (7-minute goth-anthem organ version from 1998 EP)
  6. Ascension of the Spirit (this is the 11:48 second version as this is supposed to be a hidden track)

2000

Blitz Local

In May 2000, the song Goodnight was featured on the Blitz Local compilation CD, which was distributed by Bigwig Enterprises.

We The Living, Vol. 3

On July 1, 2000, a compilation album called We the Living, Volume 3 was released featuring a slightly different version of Whisper.

Origin

On November 4, 2000, the demo album Origin was released with the help of Bigwig Enterprises, who manufactured and distributed it.

  1. Anywhere (outtake)
  2. Origin
  3. Whisper
  4. Imaginary
  5. My Immortal
  6. Where Will You Go
  7. Field Of Innocence
  8. Even In Death
  9. Anywhere
  10. Lies
  11. Away From Me
  12. Eternal

Outtakes for this album include:

  1. Listen to the Rain
  2. Demise
  3. Catherine

2001

The 7 Ball Gas Collection, Vol 25

In May 2001, Even in Death was featured on yet another compilation disc called The Gas Collection 25 under the caption of "-SOMEBODY SIGN THESE GUYS-".

Automata

In July 2001, another version of Whisper was featured on another compilation disc called Automata, or often referred to as Automata 3.0, as it's the third issue of the magazine series.

The Insanity of Logic

This was going to be a compilation/collections album of Evanescence's previous works. However, Evanescence was signed to their deal with Wind-Up, and The Insanity of Logic collection was unable to be completed. This would have been the first and only release that contained the song You.[citation needed]

Demo sessions

Demos for Fallen were starting to be recorded sometime during this year. We are not sure which songs were recorded but we can only presume based off of style when they could have been recorded.

Some demos worked on from October to November 2001 were released on a cassette tape as part of Fallen 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set in 2024.[1] These include:

  1. Imaginary (Demo 10.10.01)
  2. Whisper (Demo 10.10.01)
  3. Haunted (Demo 10.10.01)
  4. Taking Over Me (Demo 11.15.01)
  5. My Last Breath (Demo 11.15.01)

2002

Demo sessions

Demos for Fallen were starting to be recorded sometime during this year. We are not sure which songs were recorded but we can only presume based off of style when they could have been recorded.

A 2002 demo of Bring Me to Life was remastered and officially released as part of Fallen (20th Anniversary Edition) on September 28, 2023. This is similar to demo #2.

Some demos worked on from March to October 2002 were released on a cassette tape as part of Fallen 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set in 2024.[1] These include:

  3. Going Under (Demo 8.8.02)

  3. Farther Away (Fallen b-side/Lost Whispers Version)
