General information
Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing is the fourth track and the fourth and final single from Recover, Vol. 1. It was released on Amy Lee's YouTube channel with an accompanying music video on December 15, 2015.[1] The song was originally by Chris Isaak.
Amy posted this statement on Facebook about how they started this song during the 2009 sessions when recording for Evanescence's third album. It was submitted for the film The Cabin in the Woods, but was rejected:
This cover and I have history. We've been through a lot together! It all started back in '09. I'm always on the lookout for a chance to write for film, and the people making "Cabin in the Woods" wanted a cover of this song for the scene where a girl is dared to make out with a taxidermy wolf head on the wall. Gotta love it! We were hanging out writing together anyway, so I decided to take a stab at it with my collaborator and friend, Will Hunt (producer/owner of Spaceway Studios in Ft. Worth). They sent us the scene to write to and we had a blast making a short part of this version- we LOVED it! …They didn't! Ha. And so it goes. We went ahead and finished out the song in my studio just for us, and after many late night jams with friends decided it was too cool to waste- it was going on the next album. That album was the first time I watched something I was working on totally blow up in my face. The suits had a change of heart during a frustrating recording process and I was told that none of the songs I'd been pouring my heart into for a year, in any form, were good enough- time to start over. I was devastated. I was furious. I was determined to take control of the situation and use it to push myself forward. It ended up making me angry enough to write Evanescence's heaviest album- which I love- and we did end up using 3 songs from the original project, but I was still left feeling unsatisfied about what I lovingly refer to as my "broken record." I've believed, mostly alone, in this damaged little handful of unfinished recordings for 5 years- and for the first time, I own them. I plan to finish some, re-do some, and probably keep a couple to myself. Since this one is a cover, I decided to mix it the way I wanted it and put it out alongside the covers I've been doing lately. It feels SO good to finally share it! SWEET RELEASE![2] |
The track was performed by Amy Lee, Will B. Hunt and Chad Copelin, and production was handled by Amy Lee, Will B. Hunt and Steve Lillywhite.[2]

Lyrics
You ever love someone so much
You thought your little heart was gonna break in two?
(I didn't think so)
You ever tried with all your heart and soul
To get your lover back to you?
(I wanna hope so)
You ever pray with all your heart and soul
Just to watch him walk away?
Baby did a bad bad thing
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad thing)
And I feel like crying
I feel like crying
You ever toss and turn you're lying awake
And thinking about the one you love?
(I don't think so)
You ever close your eyes you're making believe
You're holding the one you're dreaming of?
(Well if you say so)
It hurts so bad when you finally know
Just how low, low, low, low, low, he'll go
Baby did a bad bad thing
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad bad thing)
Baby did a bad bad thing (baby did a bad bad thing)
And I feel like crying
I feel like crying
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Baby did a bad bad thing
Baby did a bad bad thing
Baby did a bad bad thing
Baby did a bad bad thing
Baby did a bad bad thing
And I feel like crying
I feel like crying
Video
The music video was made and directed by Eric Ryan Anderson, who also created the front cover of the EP. It shows Amy in her home studio recording the vocals and keyboard, singing on the floor and walking around New York at dusk singing. The video has various layered effects from one shot to another and is in black and white.

- ↑ According to Amy, a short version of the final version was recorded but rejected by the film producers. The song was finished at her home studio, but it had a different mix than the one released on Recover.
