Aftermath is a film soundtrack by Amy Lee and Dave Eggar for the 2014 film War Story. It was released on August 25, 2014 to the iTunes Store and Amazon.com.[2][3] A snippet of a song from the album, "Between Worlds", was uploaded to Amy's YouTube channel and Evanescence's Vevo channel on August 6.[4][5] Another snippet of the album, from "Voice in My Head", was later uploaded on the same two channels on August 11.[6][7]
The album contains music that wasn't included in the movie, but inspired by it.
Background
Amy first revealed that she and Dave Eggar scored the film War Story in December 2013 on Twitter.[8] A month later in January 2014, she had an interview with MTV News where she revealed that the new material is going to "surprise" her fans. She explained:
It's going to surprise my fans. It's not what you’d expect; the film is very dark, very introspective. There's not even a lot of dialogue, which is great, because to me it makes this beautiful, sad platform for music. There's a lot of blending of sounds, a lot of ominous tones. I play a lot of keyboard, and a lot of Taurus pedal. There's a lot of low drones.[9] |
Before the interview was released, it was revealed that Amy is suing her label Wind-up Records for withholding $1.5 million in royalties.[10] Amy later said that it would be best for her to remain quiet about the issue.[9] Two months later, she announced that she was free from the record label deal and that she was free to do whatever she wanted.[11]
The album title reflects that the movie is about the aftermath of war and "the aftermath of [the character] dealing with the tragedy that she’s witnessed."[12]
Recording
The recording process for the album took a period of about a year and a half, from 2013 to 2014.[13] Dave Eggar stated in an interview with Games of Evanescence that the process of the recording was "really fun" and that they changed many things during this process. He also said that they decided to add music that was inspired by the film but not included on it, so that the listener could become a "part of [their] journey".[13]
Amy programmed, engineered and produced Push the Button, which was used in a sex scene that the film director couldn't find the right song for. Amy admitted that the song being the final product was challenging for her.[9]
For Dark Water, Amy asked Moroccan singer Malika Zarra to translate the lyrics into Arabic and sing over a drum loop and oud strumming for 20 minutes.[14][15] She was coached by Amy on a few parts in order to get more material, then Amy took her vocal tracks home and "let it live" in her studio.[14] She clipped out "amazing moments" she heard and put them in the song, saying "it was like cherry picking. It probably makes zero sense, it might as well be Sigur Rós."[14]
The instrumental Voice in My Head came about when Amy and Dave were jamming live together in the studio and this ended up being the final recording.[16]
Amy expressed the whole process was "freeing" and it wasn't all about "production and singles and worldwide success, it’s about the integrity of the art piece we’re creating."[9]
Artwork
The artwork for the album was created by graphic designer Dan Mandell. Dave Eggar said in an interview that the artwork captured the spirit of the album and the "conflict between freedom and confinement" which he says is a strong theme in War Story.[13]
