We Are The Fallen

We Are The Fallen (WATF) is rock band formed in 2009 by former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody, including former Evanescence drummer Rocky Gray and rhythm guitarist John LeCompt, former American Idol singer Carly Smithson, and bassist Marty O'Brien. The band was initially called The Fallen, but had to change their name in June 2009 because of copyright issues with another band called The Fallen.[1][2] The band's name alludes to Evanescence's 2003 album Fallen, in which, from We Are the Fallen members, only Ben Moody took part in making and recording (alongside Evanescence co-founder and main songwriter Amy Lee).

Evanescence was founded by Amy and Ben in 1994 as a duo project. The two released two Evanescence EPs in the 1990s and a demo CD in 2000, before making Fallen. After Fallen was completed, Ben hired his friends John and Rocky as tour players to play on the Fallen tour. In an August 2003 interview, Ben said only Rocky could play on the next Evanescence album and John and the other tour player Will Boyd weren't needed on the album.[3] Ben left Evanescence mid-tour in October 2003. In June 2009, he said that he began planning We Are the Fallen in 2003, when he had discussions with John and Rocky about leaving Evanescence and coming together to do music "with someone else. But the timing wasn't right and it wasn't something I was willing to rush in to".[1]

In 2010, Amy commented on We Are The Fallen:

Vin1.jpg It just doesn't have anything to do with me or Evanescence. The only thing that bothers me about it, really, is I keep hearing...about 'the original members'. The only original members of Evanescence are me and Ben; John and Rocky came into the band after we'd already recorded Fallen, so there's a lot of years there... that didn't include anybody but Ben and I. Other than that, I don't have an opinion or anything to say about it.[4] Vin2.jpg

Evanescence bassist Tim McCord said on We Are The Fallen: "We Are The Fallen will NOT affect ANYTHING Evanescence."[5]

Originally, We Are The Fallen intended to release a few songs every two months for a year and a half. Instead, the band signed a record deal with Universal Republic on October 28, 2009 and announced a debut album for an early 2010 release. On December 12, 2009, We Are The Fallen announced that they had finished recording the album. The band has also announced via Twitter a support tour with H.I.M.[6] and the release of Bury Me Alive via iTunes. We Are The Fallen also had the song, Without You, streaming on their website and MySpace page. Both of these songs are on their debut album.

In 2010, Amy commented on We Are The Fallen:

Evanescence's bassist Tim McCord said on We Are The Fallen: "We Are The Fallen will NOT affect ANYTHING Evanescence."[7]

Just over a year after the album's release, Ben Moody confirmed that the band were dropped from their record label.[8]

In January 2012, the band released a digital version of the Cirque Des Damnés concert performed the previous year. They also planned to release two EPs, one with all new music, and one with cover songs of '80s rock songs. On May 20, 2012, Ben uploaded a video onto his YouTube account of himself and Carly explaining the future plans for the band. He stated that he had written enough material for one and a half new albums. He also said that John and Rocky had also been writing music. Carly said that she wrote a "killer hit" that she was yet to preview to the rest of the band.[9] Since then, the band have remained quiet and haven't released any new music.

On April 7, 2017, it was announced that Carly, John, Marty and Rocky were collaborating on a new song for Rocky's upcoming horror movie, 10/31, which was due to be released later in the year.[10] Other artists working on the soundtrack include Morgan Lander from Kittie, and Lindsay Schoolcraft from Cradle of Filth.[11]

After an 11-year hiatus, the band were due to play at Shiprocked in January 2022.[12] However, they were taken off the bill a few weeks before the show. Carly revealed on an Instagram comment that the festival changed their COVID-19 policy to require performers be fully vaccinated, including the additional administering of the booster dosage. She wrote; "There wasn’t enough time for everyone [in the band] to get boosted so a lot of bands couldn’t participate." In addition, she noted that We Are The Fallen would play in 2023 along with land shows prior.
