Gears 5 is a third-person shooter video game developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One. It is the sixth installment of the Gears of War series. The ultimate edition was released on September 6, 2019. The standard edition of the game was released worldwide on September 10, 2019 to generally favourable reviews.

Amy Lee and Xbox have redefined the classic Fleetwood Mac song, The Chain, to embody the dark threat of Kait (the game's protagonist)'s abuser, the evil Queen Myrrah, calling out and threatening her. As Kait nears the end of the journey in the spot, she stands, revs her Lancer, and fights back against her abuser. The lyrics help drive the narrative, as each line corresponds with the chaotic journey Kait is experiencing, both in the desert and in her own mind. Amy said the following about covering this song:

I'm proud to lend my voice to this reimagining of “The Chain” for Gears 5. I was drawn to the story of Kait overcoming fear and standing up to fight. Her story of breaking out with her own voice is most definitely one I relate to!

Evanescence recorded the full cover in Nashville during October 2019. The Chain was officially released on November 22, 2019. Amy originally recorded a short version of the song as a solo project which was used in the trailer. Her version remains unreleased.
