The Open Door: Track 4
Lithium is a psychiatric drug used as a mood stabilizer, often prescribed to people with bipolar disorder and/or mood swings, along with other mood disorders. Described as a track "which embraces feeling over numbness," Amy has said her soured relationship with ex-boyfriend Shaun Morgan of Seether was the inspiration for the track.
Before the release of The Open Door, the song was suspected by some to be a cover of the Nirvana song which bears the same name. The song's release has proven this to be false.
The enchanting duo consisting of vocals and piano immediately reminds us of My Immortal. When the drums and guitars come in, the atmosphere becomes even more solemn. The vocals take care of emotion and consequently sadden the listener, thus reminding us of songs off Origin. This song is viewed by some as the album’s first real highlight and has definite potential as a single.
Lyrics
Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without
Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow
Oh, but God, I want to let it go
Come to bed, don't make me sleep alone
Couldn't hide the emptiness you let it show
Never wanted it to be so cold
Just didn't drink enough to say you love me
I can't hold on to me
Wonder what's wrong with me
Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without
Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow
Oh, don't want to let it lay me down this time
Drown my will to fly
Here in the darkness I know myself
Can't break free until I let it go
Let me go
Darling, I forgive you after all
Anything is better than to be alone
And in the end I guess I had to fall
Always find my place among the ashes
I can't hold on to me
Wonder what's wrong with me
Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without
Lithiii-
Stay in love with me
Oh, I'm gonna let it go
