When I'm Gone is a song from Body Count's sixth studio album, Carnivore, featuring Amy Lee that was released on March 6, 2020.[1] The song is about Body Count's vocalist, Ice-T, losing his friend, Nipsey Hussle, after he was murdered in 2019.

Ice-T mentioned that he may perform it live with Amy on The Tonight Show sometime, but no date has yet been confirmed.[2]

In an interview with Loudwire published on February 28, 2020, this is what Amy said about the song and collaboration:

Vin1.jpg I am so excited about this collaboration - I felt like I had to fight for it. It was one of these things that like, somebody told somebody else, told somebody else that it'd be cool if I might be on it, and I was like 'What? Give me the track!'. It's one of those things, you know, I love the idea of collaboration, especially when it's something really different than what I do. Because to me those are the collaborations that I love, when you see two artists come together that are not the same, and by using the two of them it creates a new sound, but that's also something that doesn't always work. You can't just mash any two things up, you know? So I'm like 'Just let me hear the song', and knowing that it's very, very possible that I'm not going to be able to find myself within it, and it's not going to work, but I heard the song and I loved the song! Immediately had an idea and the meaning. I don't want to give stuff away because it's not my music, so I can't, but the meaning really, really spoke to me. It's something that I feel deeply and talk about deeply, it's about loss and not wasting time with the people that you love, and that just means so much to me. Anyway, I had an idea, but they were in a hurry and it was like the end of tour and I was like 'I'm almost home'. It was just one of those things where they were like, 'We've already ran out of time' and I was just like, 'Please I'm just going to send you what I was going to do', and then they got really excited about it actually, and it actually ended up working out just because I didn't take no for an answer. I'm really excited about how it turned out, I can't wait for people to hear it. I don't feel like it's fair for me to give too much away, but it's right around the corner. I'm SO stoked about it![3] Vin2.jpg

Ice-T revealed that Vince Dennis, one of the Body Count members, approached Amy about the collaboration. She wrote Ice-T a nice e-mail saying that she connected to the song because she lost somebody close to her and that she wrote her vocals "from the heart".[4]

During the making of this album, I received the unfortunate news that Nipsey Hussle was murdered in Los Angeles. It really hurt me, and then the outcry and love and support after his death was incredible. But it inspired me to write this song.

Every day we lose somebody close to us, a loved one
And only then do we seem to find the time
The way to tell how much we care about them

Don't tell me that you miss me
Don't tell me that you love me
Don't tell me that you need me
Don't wait to tell me that you love me

When I'm gone
This is our life
When I'm gone
This is our time

Don't wait until I'm dead
Until these words are said
Don't wait until I die
Then start to fake cry
Tell the people that you love, that you love 'em now
Show the people you appreciate just how
How much they mean to ya
How much you care how real it is
They're right in front of ya
Your family, your wife, your kids
Don't wait for tragedy to tell 'em how you really feel
Don't wait
Tomorrow might be too fuckin' late

When I'm gone
This is our life
Don't wait to tell me that you miss me
When I'm gone
This is our time
Don't wait to tell me that you love me
When I'm gone
This is our fire
Don't wait to tell me that you need me
When I'm gone
We can't afford to waste a moment

I will be lost without you
How do I make it right?
How do I take back all the time I’ve wasted alone?
And how would it make you feel?
How would it make you feel
Knowing you had the chance and let it slip away?

Don't wait until I'm dead
You've got friends
Tell 'em that you care
You've got family
Tell 'em how you feel
Don't wait to say how great a guy I was and all that bullshit

When I'm gone
This is our life
Don't wait to tell me that you miss me
When I'm gone
This is our time
Don't wait to tell me that you love me
When I'm gone
This is our fire
Don't wait to tell me that you need me
When I'm gone
We can't afford to waste a moment

Seems like every day death comes unexpectedly
Seems like yesterday when my man was sitting next to me
So many things I could've said and that we could've done
The reaper's coming but I never thought he'd be the one
I don't do funerals, don't wanna see you in no box
I miss my homies, and my love for them will never stop
Don't have regret, and wait until your loved one dies
Now it's your chance, tell them while they're still alive

When I'm gone
This is our life
Don't wait to tell me that you miss me
When I'm gone
This is our time
Don't wait to tell me that you love me
When I'm gone
This is our fire
Don't wait to tell me that you need me
When I'm gone
We can't afford to waste a moment

Too many people pass away every single day
And we don't show them how we feel until it's too late
I appreciate, or love is something we won't say
We delay it 'til they're gone and say it at their grave

We delay it 'til they're gone and say it at their grave
We delay it 'til they're gone and say it at their grave
'Til they're gone and say it at their grave
