General Information

Written by: A. Lee and B. Moody

This song is considered to be one of Evanescence's trademark songs. Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice provided the male vocals on the Origin version and Stephanie Pierce provided the female backup vocals (soprano) for this version. Later, this song was remade with Amy and David's vocals, and different lyrics. This is the strongest Evanescence song, with heavy guitars and drums in it. It is one of the shortest titles of all Evanescence's songs, sharing this feature with Sick. The live version of the song doesn't feature the choir at the beginning and at the end, where there is a long guitar solo is played.

Lyrics

Origin Version

Bound at every limb by my shackles of fear
Sealed with lies through so many tears
Lost from within, pursuing the end
I fight for the chance to be lied to again

You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above

They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me

But through my tears breaks a blinding light
Birthing a dawn to this endless night
Arms outstretched, awaiting me
An open embrace upon a bleeding tree

Rest in me and I'll comfort you
I have lived and I died for you
Abide in me and I vow to you
I will never forsake you

They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me

They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me

Rest in me, I'll comfort you
I have lived and died for you
Abide in me, I vow to you
I will never forsake you

They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me

Post-Origin Demo Version

Bind [Bind] my limbs with fear [fear]
Choke me with tears [tears]
I won't die for you

You've [you've] been here before [before]
And come back for more [more]
But not this time

You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above

Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
I should have known all along it was all a lie
I should have known it was all a lie

Now [now] I know the truth [truth]
I'm through fearing you [you]
And I am free

You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above

Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
I should have known all along it was all a lie [lie]
I should have known it was all a lie

Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
I should have known all along it was all a lie [lie]

Somebody tell me what made us all believe you
[I should have known] I should have known it was all a lie
I should have known it was all a lie

Trivia

Lies is also, the names of the consumer products (pizza, soda, doll and perfume) in the Everybody's Fool video. According to Amy, this is only a mere coincidence:

Vin1.jpg In the “Everybody’s Fool” video you advertise the brand “Lies” and the title of the DVD is “Anywhere but Home”. Is there a relation with the songs contained in “Origin”? If really there is one, what’s the kind of relation?

"Ha. That’s a funny coincidence, but nothing intentional."[2]
