Lacrymosa is the seventh track from Evanescence's second studio album, The Open Door. The song was first mentioned by Amy during a Blender interview in May 2006: "It's part of the Requiem called 'Lacrimosa'. In the end it gets heavy and huge and metal. It features elements of W.A. Mozart's Lacrimosa from his Requiem in D Minor. In the chorus, the choir sings Lacrimosa...dies illa... lacrimosa... dona eis requiem, which roughly translates to "tearful that day... tearful... grant them rest." Though the full lyrics from Mozart's Lacrimosa is: Lacrimosa dies illa /Qua resurget ex favilla /Judicandus homo reus/Huic ergo parce, Deus/Pie Jesu Domine/Dona eis requiem. Amen, which means Tearful that day/on which will rise from ashes/guilty man for judgment/So have mercy, O Lord, on this man/compassionate Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Amen.

Lacrymosa was confirmed to be reworked and included on the orchestral album, Synthesis, when the track list was revealed through the album's pre-order on September 15, 2017. This version was performed live for the first time on October 14, 2017 at the Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada for the Synthesis Live tour. Watch a performance of the song here.

In the Synthesis tour program/songbook, it is stated:
<blockquote>This song, from our second album, The Open Door, is built around the classic Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem K.626. Mozart's music is one of the inspirations of our sound, and this is our homage.</blockquote>

In a track-by-track post on Evanescence's Facebook, Amy explained why the song was a natural choice to be reworked on Synthesis:

<blockquote>The original was based on Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ and the movie Amadeus, which is why it was a natural choice to include. It was something I’d wanted to do for a long time before we did it on The Open Door album. ‘Lacrymosa’ is one of my favorite pieces of classical music. I’ve always been proud of the song. To do it now, and get to pump up the orchestra and classical music aspect of it, feels really good. I threw in a little bit of opera in there instead of the choir in the original. I feel like it’s a cool piece of who I am. Not on a corny level, just a teeny-tiny taste.</blockquote>

Lacrymosa was confirmed to be on Synthesis when the tracklist was revealed through the album's pre-order on September 15, 2017. The song length was revelaed on iTunes on October 10, 2017 as 3:42, leaving many fans speculating that it could be the third single from Synthesis.
The song was released on October 27, 2017, even though it was never officially announced as a single.

General information

Written by: A. Lee and T. Balsamo

Lacrymosa is the seventh track from Evanescence's second studio album, The Open Door. The song was first mentioned by Amy during a Blender interview in May 2006: "It's part of the Requiem called 'Lacrimosa'. In the end it gets heavy and huge and metal. It's fun!"[1]

The song features elements of W.A. Mozart's Lacrimosa from his Requiem in D Minor.[2] The name of the song derives from the Latin term lacrimosa, which means "tearful".[3] This word is also the scientific name for a species of moth, Catocala Lacrymosa, also known as the 'Tearful Underwing'. This species of moth features on the cover of The Open Door's booklet and on the cover for the "Sweet Sacrifice" radio promo CD.

The song was created by looping an old typewriter that Amy bought.[4]

Amy stated that she wanted to make Mozart's Requiem metal since she listened to it as a teenager.

Vin1.jpg This was the time for that, for trying things I hadn't been brave enough to try before. I think Mozart would have loved it. He was a rebel.[5] Vin2.jpg

Recorded in a chapel[2] at Seattle, Washington,[6] the song was partially written for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, but was scrapped by the producers. "I thought it would be awesome for the opening scene, but they wanted something original," Amy stated.[7] However, the producers of the movie later said that Evanescence wasn't approached for the Narnia soundtrack.[8]

A 22-piece orchestra led by David Campbell starts off the song. The choirs are performed by the Millenium Choir.[9]

Vin1.jpg Dave Campbell is an enormous inspiration source for me. He's so talented. The way he arranges orchestral parts is remarkable. It's the element of our music that makes me cry![6] Vin2.jpg

Amy's description of the song:

Vin1.jpg I saw Amadeus when I was nine years old and fell in love with Mozart. The part of Mozart's Requiem called "Lacrimosa" is my favorite piece of music ever. I always wished we could cover it, but with programming and guitars and make it cool. It's our moment to try all the things I wanted to and couldn't, so I started messing with it in Protools. Terry wrote some riffs and turned it into this awesome metal epic.[10] Vin2.jpg

A 30-second clip of this song was used in the trailer for The Open Door.[11][12]

Amen.

Evanescence added Lacrymosa to the setlist of their The Open Door tour (2006-07).[13][14] It was later played at the New York secret show on November 4, 2009.[15][16] It was also played for the first time in three years in Brazil on October 4, 2012.[17]

This song, from our second album, The Open Door, is built around the classic Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem K.626. Mozart's music is one of the inspirations of our sound, and this is our homage.

In a track-by-track post on Evanescence's Facebook, Amy explained why the song was a natural choice to be reworked on Synthesis:[18]

The original was based on Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ and the movie Amadeus, which is why it was a natural choice to include. It was something I’d wanted to do for a long time before we did it on The Open Door album. ‘Lacrymosa’ is one of my favorite pieces of classical music. I’ve always been proud of the song. I feel like it’s a cool piece of who I am. Not on a corny level, just a teeny-tiny taste.

The song was released on October 27, 2017, even though it was never officially announced as a single.[19]

Lyrics

The Open Door Version

Out on your own
Cold and alone again
Can this be what you really wanted, baby?

[Lacrimosa]
Blame it on me
[Dies illa]
Set your guilt free
[Lacrimosa]
Nothing can hold you back now
[Dona eis requiem]

Now that you're gone
I feel like myself again
Grieving the things I can't repair and willing...

[Lacrimosa]
To let you blame it on me
[Dies illa]
And set your guilt free
[Lacrimosa]
I don't want to hold you back now love
[Dona eis requiem]

I can't change who I am
Not this time, I won't lie to keep you near me
And in this short life,
There's no time to waste on giving up
My love wasn't enough

[Lacrimosa]
And you can blame it on me
[Dies illa]
Just set your guilt free, honey
[Lacrimosa]
I don't want to hold you back now love
[Dona eis requiem]

Amen

Synthesis Version

I can't change who I am

Out on your own
Cold and alone again
Can this be what you really wanted, baby?
Now that you’re gone
I feel like myself again
Grieving the things I can’t repair and willing...

(Lacrimosa)
To let you blame it on me (Dies illa)
And set your guilt free (Lacrimosa)
I don’t want to hold you back now, love

I can’t change who I am
Not this time, I won’t lie to keep you near me
And in this short life,
There’s no time to waste on giving up
My love wasn’t enough

(Ahhhh)
To let you blame it on me
And set your guilt free
I don’t want to hold you back now, love

Ahhhhh oohhhhhh ahhhhhh

Trivia

 • The bridge had different lyrics as seen in the handwritten lyrics of the song on The Open Door journal. Early lyrics were "there's no time to waste on digging my own grave" instead of "giving up- my love wasn't enough".
