Apocalyptica is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Helsinki, Finland, formed in 1993. The band is composed of classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso (all three of whom are graduates of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki), and drummer Mikko Sirén. Originally a Metallica classical tribute band, the band eventually adopted a neoclassical metal style without the use of conventional guitars.

In a 2010 interview, Eicca mentioned that they worked with Ben Moody on an unreleased song that was to feature guest vocals from TOOL's Maynard James Keenan. Unfortunately, Maynard was not able to record the vocals at the time, and the song has been shelved ever since. They also mentioned that they wrote Broken Pieces with Amy Lee in mind, but ended up going with Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf as they thought the song fit her vocals better. They haven't ruled out collaborating with Amy in the future.[1]
