Written by: A. Lee and T. Balsamo

Described as a song about "a post-relationship catharsis that head-dives from an otherworldly intro into a hard-driving thrash of hard rock guitars and soaring rock vocals" by Evanescence.com.

The listener is captivated by Amy’s universe as the very first notes start off. Amy repeatedly takes a deep breath in order to absorb us for an hour. Terry’s guitar part flirts with high notes, as Amy’s voice follows the same tonality path.

In an interview, Amy was asked: "Which was the song on "The Open Door" that gave more trouble to you? Which was the song that needed more adjustments to obtain "the final cut"?"

She replied: "Sweet Sacrifice took the longest to write. Terry and I began tracking it at the beginning of 2005, got stuck on it and sort of abandoned it, half-baked, for months. Then in September we pulled it out and finally had a breakthrough with it and it became one of our favorite songs on the album. Usually when I get stuck on a song like that it dies. If I can't get the idea out when its fresh and urgent, the feeling just goes away- but Sweet Sacrifice came back to life."

Amy's description of the song:

"It's the one song on The Open Door that's about the same abusive relationship which was the source of all the songs on Fallen. It was appropriate to put this song at the beginning, but it comes from a much stronger standpoint than Fallen. It's not saying, 'I'm trapped in fear and somebody save me.' It's saying, 'Fear is only in our minds ... I'm not afraid anymore.'"

Officially chosen as the third single from The Open Door after requests from the band and fan reactions prompted the label to rethink ideas of releasing All That I'm Living For as the single.

The song is nominated for the Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy Award. It is the heaviest song on The Open Door.
It's true

We're all a little insane

But it's so clear

Now that I'm unchained

Fear is only in our minds

Taking over all the time

Fear is only in our minds

but it's taking over all the time

You poor sweet innocent thing

Dry your eyes and testify

You know you live to break me

Don't deny

Sweet sacrifice

One day

I'm gonna forget your name

And one sweet day

You're gonna drown in my lost pain

Fear is only in our minds

Taking over all the time

Fear is only in our minds

But it's taking over all the time

You poor sweet innocent thing

Dry your eyes and testify

And oh, you love to hate me

Don't you, honey?

I'm your sacrifice

I dream in darkness

I sleep to die

Erase the silence

Erase my life

Do you wonder [Our burning ashes]

Why you hate? [Blacken the day]

Are you still so weak [A world of nothingness]

To survive your mistakes? [Blow me away]

You poor sweet innocent thing

Dry your eyes and testify

You know you live to break me
Don't deny

The video was filmed on March 9 and March 10, 2007 and was directed by Paul Brown. For each day of production, one lucky EvClub member was given the chance to visit the set and take pictures while they watched the video being made (see Contest Details).

CNN broadcast a segment featuring some behind-the-scenes footage of the video on March 16, 2007 (video).

"It's mostly live performance," singer Amy Lee said recently on the set of their "Sweet Sacrifice" video. "It's not so much fluff and flying and tricks and wolves and stuff. It's more really just about the song, and that is unique for us. We usually do crazy stuff." The video does have a "cool twist," which Lee refused to reveal, but it will mainly feature the band performing on a set inspired by 2000's psychotherapist thriller "The Cell." "Like we're in the walls of our minds, sort of," Lee said.

Paul Brown, who has directed videos for Audioslave and Matisyahu, helmed the project, which will feature scenes of the live footage projected onto a wall. "It's gonna be sort of like a video within the video," Lee said. "Since the song is our heaviest single, we really wanted to focus on mostly performance but still have something about it that's really unique. And I think [Paul] really hit the nail on the head."

The video was officially released at launch.yahoo.com on April 5th, however iTunes North America had accidentally made it briefly available for purchase the day before.

Written by: A. Lee and T. Balsamo

Terry Balsamo's favorite song on The Open Door, and the song Amy's finding it most fun to play live from The Open Door. The piano is the principal instrument for this song. It displays the maturity of the band’s new sound. The choir once again appears, causing the end of the song to be really epic. It includes a piano solo of 41 seconds, but it continues after a second bridge (All my fears [..] own way out now) and to the end of the song.

Amy's description of the song:

"A couple of years ago, I felt so alone that I was dreading going on tour. We had just arrived in Lisbon and I was in my room feeling jet-lagged, weird and tired. I had just been home where I could see the stars at night. But when I looked out the hotel window in Lisbon, I couldn't see anything because we were in this big city. That was the last straw. I felt so depressed, I just started singing this song."

During the bridge, the background choir sings "Alma surdo, loucura, onde está seu alma? Loucura, todo sozinho" (Portuguese with some grammatical mistakes) which tries to mean "Deaf soul, madness, where is its soul? Madness, all alone" in English. In correct portuguese it would be "Alma surda, loucura, onde está sua alma? Loucura, toda sozinha"
General Information
Written by: A. Lee

Described as "a string-and-choir-infused closer distinguished as the band's first truly (almost) contented song" by Evanescence.com, the song is reminiscent of the piano ballad Give Unto Me in it's purest form.

It is decidedly upbeat and showcases an Amy Lee that is letting someone in and who sounds happily in love. She thinks it is the bravest track on the album.

Amy's description of the song:

"It’s totally scary to be so vulnerable when I know however many metalheads are going to diss it because it’s not the exact same thing [as the other songs],” Lee says. “And it doesn’t end with, ‘And then he died’ or ‘I pushed him off a cliff’ or ‘He’s a ghost really.’ It’s so cool to me and weird to me. I’ve never written a happy song, ever."

"I had gone through a lot of difficult things during the writing of the whole album, and by the end of it, I had stepped away from those bad situations. That's really hard. You have to be really brave and strong about it. After doing that, I felt so amazing. For the first time I felt like I could write a song based on how good I felt. I have never done that before ever."

The song was inspired by Josh, Amy's then boyfriend and current husband (also the inspiration behind Bring Me to Life).

The song was announced the Fourth Single from The Open Door, the video was recorded 11-14 June 2007 in Budapest, Hungary.

The Narnia song was NOT cut up. The Good Enough intro is NOT part of the Narnia song. Amy Lee confirmed on EvBoards, that the Narnia song is still intact and MAY be a future B-side.

"Good Enough" was used as both the intro and outro music for the CSI seventh season episode "Fallen Idols".

Fallen is the first full-length album by Evanescence, and their first album to achieve widespread release around the world.

Fallen was the eighth best-selling album in the U.S. in 2004, with about 2.61 million copies sold that year.

Amy Lee is quoted to have said, “We've all fallen, but at the same time we're not broken. There is the hint that we are going to get up again.” This is one of the reasons that Fallen is called what it is. Ben Moody in an interview said that Fallen was made to let people know that they aren’t alone when they feel alone or feel pain. Fallen has sold well over 14 million copies worldwide and about 5 and a half million in the US alone. The album debuted at #7 and has not fallen below #39 to date on the Billboard Album Chart. The album stayed in the top 10 for 43 non-consecutive weeks. Released March 4th, 2003. The CD was re-released in January 2004 with the band version of My Immortal. Fallen was Grammy nominated for Album of the Year in 2004. John LeCompt and Rocky Gray both had writing credits on Fallen before they officially joined the band. John has credits on Taking Over Me and Rocky has credits for writing the original version of Tourniquet (originally called My Tourniquet) for his band, Soul Embraced.
General Information
Written by: A. Lee and T. Balsamo

The song was originally written for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, but was scrapped by the director. "I thought it would be awesome for the opening scene, but they wanted something original," says Lee of the Mozart cover.

It features elements of W.A. Mozart's "Lacrimosa" from his 'Requiem in D Minor.' More info on that composition can be found here.

A 22-cord orchestra led by Dave Campbell (with whom Evanescence had already worked for their performance at the Billboard Awards 2004) starts off the song in order to introduce a choir, which serves as back up for Amy’s vocals.

"Dave Campbell is an enormous inspiration source for me," says Amy. "He’s so talented. The way he arranges orchestral parts is remarkable. It's the element of our music that makes me cry!"

Terry's guitar solo in the middle of the song adds to its sheer epic sound before the choir closes with a stunning decrescendo.

The word "Lacrymosa" means 'relating to sadness.'

Amy's description of the song:

"I saw Amadeus when I was nine years old and fell in love with Mozart. The part of Mozart's Requiem called "Lacrimosa" is my favorite piece of music ever. I always wished we could cover it, but with programming and guitars and make it cool. It's our moment to try all the things I wanted to and couldn't, so I started messing with it in Protools. Terry wrote some riffs and turned it into this awesome metal epic."

Recorded in a chapel near Seattle.

A 30 second clip of this song along with The Open Door trailer was featured on music.aol.com's page for Evanescence. It can now be seen on YouTube here.

Track #6 on Korn's 'Untouchables' album.

Track #5 on Evanescence's 'Anywhere But Home' DVD.

Korn song originally recorded on 2002’s Untouchables that Evanescence started to cover in spring 2004. The piano driven cover was also released on Evanescence's 2004 live DVD, Anywhere But Home.

"Yeah, we did a couple of shows with [EVANESCENCE] in Europe and [they] played it," Jonathan Davis of Korn told The Blitz 99.7 FM. "It's a huge, huge thing when an artist thinks of doing a cover of one of our songs, it just blows us away, and she [EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee does it so beautifully. She's told me time and time again that she's a huge KORN fan. What was really cool was that in Europe, they were supposed to headline over us and she refused to do it and made us headline over them. There's a just a lot of respect there. I think she's a great girl and I love that cover — it came out beautifully. The way I hear things in my head sometimes, the more [time I spend] in a heavy band, I'm more about melody and shit like that, so… when I heard [EVANESCENCE's version of 'Thoughtless'], it was really cool. The melodies really pop out.'" (Evanescence Website)
Lyrics
All of my hate cannot be found

I will not be drowned by your thoughtless scheming

So you can try to tear me down

Beat me to the ground

I will see you screaming

Thumbing through the pages of my fantasies

Pushing all the mercy down, down, down

I wanna see you try to take a swing at me

Come on, gonna put you on the ground, ground, ground

Why are you trying to make fun of me?

You think it's funny?

What the fuck you think it's doing to me?

You take your turn lashing out at me

I want you crying with you´re bloody down in front of me

I wanna kill and rape you the way you raped me

And I'll pull the trigger

And you're down, down, down

Formed in 1996 with Robert Westerholt and Sharon den Adel. This band is often mentioned, among a number of others, as sharing a similar sound with Evanescence. Last album released: The Heart of Everything in 2007.

It seems that the band had attempted a Bring me to Life style hit with first single 'What Have You Done Now;' however the song has been described as possibly the weakest on the new album.

Band lineup: Robert Westerholt (guitar), Sharon den Adel (singer), Jeroen van Veen (bass guitar), Martijn Spierenburg (keyboards), Stephen van Haestregt (drums) and Ruud Jolie (guitar).
Written by: A. Lee, B. Moody, and D. Hodges

This was the last song written for Fallen and would have been the first single, but Bring Me to Life had been put onto the Daredevil Soundtrack, so it became the second single.

The song is about Amy Lee's relationship with an abusive boyfriend, but it can be used to describe any type of abusive relationship. Lee said the song is about emerging from a "bad" relationship, explaining "And when you're at the end of your rope, when you're at the point where you realize something has to change, that you can't go on living in the situation that you're in. It's cool. It's a very strong song.". In an interview with Spin Magazine she hinted that the song was dedicated to Ben Moody. It features Amy's solo, un-layered, vocals with a very simple piano track. Some very experimental vocal work is heard throughout.

The song was released as a bonus track on iTunes when The Open Door album was released (the album had to be pre-ordered from the website) and soon spread around the Internet. The song was also released as a B-side on the Lithium Single.
Sparkling grey

In my own veins

Any more than a whisper

Any sudden movement of my heart

And I know

I know I'll have to watch them pass away

Just get through this day

Give up your way

You could be anything

Give up my way

And lose myself

Not today

That's too much guilt to pay

Sickened in the sun

You dare tell me you love me

But you held me down and screamed you wanted me to die

Honey you know

You know I'd never hurt you that way

You're just so pretty in your pain

Give up my way

And I could be anything

I'll make my own way

Without your senseless

Hate

Hate

Hate

Hate

So run

Run

Run

And hate me

If it feels good

I can't hear your screams anymore

You lied to me

But I'm older now

And I'm not buying baby

Demanding my response

Don't bother breaking the door down

I found my way out

And you'll never hurt me again
