well, if it is indeed a terrorist attack(which it doesnt look like it is), it would be pretty logical to do so. :|

just an illusion

IAW Shape, it doesn't look like it's a terrorist act. They don't usually do the same things.

yeah from what I see, it's just an accident. Won't really know till they start to investigate.

Yeah, I don't think there's any terrorism involved, but we'll have to wait and see.

Obviously this was a terrible accident. No one believes it is terrorism.

I am 30 blocks away and I can't even see the smoke. I can hear the fire truck all heading uptown, though.

I believe the building is about 40 stories high, and the helicopter hit on the 31st floor.

Helicopters and small planes go up and down the East River all day.

The FAA just said it was a small plane on visual flight path only - even though most of the eyewitnesses say it was a helicopter. It was not on FAA radar at the time.

terrorism or not, i'm gonna go ahead and blame the bush administration. they should've done more to prevent this tragedy and i'm shocked that the american people would let him get away with this again. i just pray to god that al franken wasn't in that building.

my friend just let me know about it like 10 minutes ago. freaked me out. but at least it doesnt look like a terrorist attack. it's too small.

im just glad it's like 62 blocks away from here. i got really freakin nervous. two of my friends also go to school here but we're all downtown.

the people standing around and takin pics with their cellphones are just sick. like i know it's horrible and you cant look away, but seriously? taking pictures of it?

I am kind of hoping Al Sharpton was.

Uh, so update....

Panic news is saying "we hope this is not a copycat"

2 bodies have been found on the ground. Eye witnesses saying they heard a weird noise.

Honestly, with all the planes and helicopters I see all day around here, I am surprised this doesn't happen more often.

If this had been the Chrysler Building/UN building/Empire State building, then I would say there was cause for alarm. but for now it all seems like an accident

You know though, the way we have been all over the airports and with the heightened security, if it was an "act of terrorism" they may have done it on the small scale to see if we are just that bad at keeping ourselves armed in the larger scope of things. It wouldn't be the first time our government has underestimated what people are capable of...

We had a topic on terrorism in my debate class this morning and the issue of what about securing our ports came up. If they wanted to do any real damage to America as a whole, they would strike there cause it would take an estimated 4 months for us to recover our ports and inspect all cargo being imported and exported, and we would loose literally billions upon billions with the loss of just one port, and not to mention the thousands of people who work on the docks and the ships. Just the 4 days the airporst were down after 9/11 our economy lost about 300,000,000,000$ from the ecomony. Yet the ports are probably the most unsecured area...yet we find justification and the need to search between peoples toes before getting on an airplane.

Um, Im all for the overwhelming presence of ninjas here...but I would also like to point out that it was started by a pirate...just an observation.

Terrorism or not: NORAD has just deployed fighter pilots over several US cities as a precaution.

Rumor is that the plane took a hard 90 degree turn before impacting the buildinig - from a high ranking unnamed government official. So, yeah, this will be used somehow to talk about the war on terror.

However, luggage has been found on the street from the plane.

Eyewitness reports are so freaking unreliable. One could go crazy listening to and reporting it.

With all the heightened security alerts we keep getting in the city, I am not even going to bother getting worked up. No need to panic, although that's excatly what the news wants you to do so you keep listening.

at this point knowing someone in iraq doesn't make you special. there have been so many soldiers there for so long, i think by now pretty much everyone has either friends or family deployed or waiting for deployment.

It has been confirmed it was a small fixed-wing aircraft.

One of the bodies found was supposedly strapped into a chair - indicating it came from within the plane.

As you can see from the photos - the damage to the building is minimal and more than probably superficial.

http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/061011/061011_NYfire_hmed_1p.h2.jpg

A small Cirrus 24(sp?) single engine plane (for 4 passengers) that had left Teterboro Airport.

Law enforcement reports there are 4 confirmed dead. 2 found in the building, 2 found on the ground.

My prayers go out to the victims. More than likely they were just hoping to enjoy a view of the city on their way either to or from vacation. The other were just sitting in their apartment.

YIKES! Kind of puts things is perspective about life and baseball.

So someone really hates the Yankees (could be coincidence however) or it could be another 9/11 copycat. I remember a few years back there was a teen boy in the southwest who crashed his pilot training aircraft into a building. Besides him, no one was killed, thankfully.

What???

Reports now indicate he was on board the plane, and possibly the pilot. This has nothing to do with anti-Yankee sentiment.

There is no indication this is any type of act of terror or copycat. Nothing indicates this is nothing more than a tragic accident.

And, this is a trajedy. I don't think any type of joking about this is at all appropriate. 4 people have died. 9 more are in the hospital.

My thoughts go to Cory Lidle's family.

From what a news source said, the wife and son of the pitcher were on a plane themselves when this happened so they may not even know that this happened until the plane lands.

This is a tragedy for baseball. Obviously, one of the events that come to mind is the plane crash that killed Thurman Munson, a Yankee, 27 years ago.

that's horrible to hear.

but who wants to bet that the impact isn't strong enough to send the building crumbling down?

TheLady

Mayor Bloomberg stated he cannot release the names of any victims until the family is notified.

Hearing that his family was also on a plane, it is a miracle the entire family was not on the plane with him.

Regardless of who the victim is, this is a trajedy. I am kind of annoyed the media seems to be paying more attention to it now that someone famous was involved, but that's the way the media is.

A plane of this size more than likely does not have a recorder. We may never know what really happened.

The fire is out and the building is being re-occupied.

There was some miscommunication. Mayor Bloomberg said only 2 bodies were found in the street, none in the building.

but who wants to bet that the impact isn't strong enough to send the building crumbling down?

No, just a small fire and people are being let back in. Eye witnesses report the plane didn't go into the building, but just hit it and fell down.

I think something serious must have gone wrong in the plane. Either that or he reeeeally overhyped his love for flying... but I guess love for it doesn't mean that he was amazing at it I guess.

Yet another stark reminder why I'm never in my life going on one of those god forsaken things. If I ever get that rich I'll be traveling by (personal) jet, thanks. No Cessnas for me, EVER. Those planes have it in for people.

TheLady
10-11-2006, 06:04 PM
My thoughts are that when they saw they were in trouble they tried to make a U-turn. That caused the plane to stall.

Reports are that they were travelling North, yet somehow struck the north side of the building, which would only make sense if they were attempting a U-turn.

my thought and prayers are with his widow and son.

And it makes it so much worse when it's the anchor man doing the panic speculating.

I heard so many times "It doesn't look like terrorism but we can't really be sure.", and "boy, I hope this wasn't some sick copycat incident".

Unfortunately, when we heard "plane into building" we automatically think of 9-11.

Several times a year plans or helicopters go down in NYC and the vicinity. Look at what happened to JFK Junior. During the summer there were 2 separate instances on the east river when helicopters went down.

ARGH. When a buddy called and told me that a plane had hit a building in NYC again I quickly turned on the TV expecting another terrorist attack. When it appeared that was not the case and they were unaware if anyone was hurt we started joking around to lighten the mood and I made a smart ass remark to my friend (a huge yankee fan) that this was joe torre's response to the yankees going out in the first round. He calls me like an hour later saying I was a jinx because one of the guys in the plane was a yankee. Talk about feeling like an ass. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those injured. Poor New York..

That's what the media has become: fearmongering. The news is no longer about truth, it's about ratings. When you scare the shit out of people by saying things like that chances are they will continue to watch the news hoping for more updates on the "state of terror."
