Getting close to time for me to start assembling this year's "haunt." I usually do Halloween in a fairly big way at my haus. This will be my third haunt and it just keeps getting a little bigger every year. Neighborhood kids have been asking me as early as February if I'll be doing another haunt. I've gotten a lot of good ideas and props and other materials from different sites around the Internet.

Behold the linkage...

Those are some good sites for starters. Some have really good ideas for building your own props, costumes and effects. Others just sell stuff but it's often really good stuff. I'm trying to get an early start to construction this year so it should turn out better than ever and I'm really excited about it all. Does anyone else do a home or yard haunt for Halloween? Anybody have any special plans for Halloween?

This halloween, I'm hoping to just hang out with one of my friends and give some little kids candy. I might go as a cartoon villain just to see the looks on their faces.:D

Beacon Hill in Boston goes all out for Halloween, and a lot of college students go there to trick-or-treat, so that's what I'm doing.

I want to go as a pirate, but I'm having issues...I'm picky, so none of the cheap, cheesy Party City costumes will work for me lol. So I'm trying to get the missing pieces of my costume elsewhere, and eBay is being decidedly disappointing.

I have black leggings, almost-knee-high boots, and a possible black ruffled skirt (I'll have to decide if it looks good or not). I need a chemise/blouse and a waist-cincher/underbust corset...or a sash. Gah. It's confusing. AND I'm poor so I can't spend a billion dollars. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to what I should go for and what I should look for? I assume I should look for a red/black striped sash, a red or black underbust corset, and a white chemise/blouse...

Yeah. I need help. Haha. Anyone good with this stuff?

Try looking at the thrift store, sometimes you come across some awesome finds. you could make your own sash or whatever by getting something you like from the thrift store, or go to a fabric store (hope that helps a little)

im planning on having two costumes. me and my friends are all gonna get a hilarious cheesy costume from the halloween store that will just crack us all up every time we look at each other, and then i'm going to be something...dead? a pretty ghost? i'm not sure but i want to make my costume. i'm not exactly sure what my second costume is going to be, but unless i think of an awesome costume that wont go well with these all i know is i want to wear my knee high black leather lace up boots. i never get to wear those things anymore:( lol.

any suggestions?

I would suggest putting one arm inside your blouse, and putting a stick through the sleeve. Katya the peg-armed pirate.

I not only build my haunt by myself I'm also the only "actor" in it. So when I want additional "people" for monsters or whatever I make the frameworks from PVC and wire but the costumes/clothing is almost always thrift store and bargain basement stuph. Some of the sites I linked in my above post also sell costumes but I can't vouch for their quality since I've never bought one from any of them.

This thread reminded me that I want to dress-up for Halloween this year. There's one problem though... we don't celebrate Halloween over here. So I'll only do it if there's some sort of theme party or something.

And I was thinking of going as Puss 'N Boots. :p

I wish I was going to some sort of halloween party this year. I would have loved to dress up as little red riding hood (I've wanted to do that before I see the Call me when your sober video)
I could have given little red riding hood a little twisted yet haunting look!

Halloween's the biggest holiday of the year for me haha. There's a show playing here, and one of my friends is having a huge party. Everyone is apparetly going to do acid, but I'm pretty sure I won't be. So I'll just be drunk and trying to take care of all the fucked up people. Grand.

But I'm going to be a vampire, of course. I have these like.... teeth implants I got made. They were so expensive, but they actually lacerate skin, lol. It's pretty cool. They look so real.

I was thinking about being a fucked up version of Alice in Wonderland, but I don't think I can deviate from the vampiness, lol.

But I thought you were already a vampire? Halloween is supposed to be a holiday when you dress up as something you're not, pfft. :p

I think a pink glittery princess dress would suit you this year. ;)

Halloween or not my friend Angela and I do it all the time. You have no idea how fun it is to freak out all the people driving by at night. Stand completely still and stare at them wide-eyed while baring your fangs the moment their headlights make you visible. Love it. :D

Like many of you I too love Halloween. I don't know if I'll be able to do anything the day-of this year though because I might have a rehearsal. In any case, I'll find some way to celebrate my favorite holiday.

Seriously, can it get any better than tons of free candy? I submit that it cannot!

I dunno. I get as big a kick outta designing and building the stuph for my haunt as the neighborhood kids do in visiting it. I also get a kick outta putting on the hockey mask and hanging around my carport with my axe and scaring the bejeezus outta folks.

Yeah Halloween's my favorite holiday too. :)

I'm going as Delirium of the Endless.

All my friends and I are going as the Endless - my boyfriend as Destruction, his brother as Dream, his girlfriend as Death, and her ex-husband as Destiny. We're only missing Desire and Despair, which is pretty good.

But for work, I think I'll go as Death. Delirium doesn't realy clothe herself properly as she's, well, DELIRIOUS. So.

I actually have no idea what I am going to be for halloween. I was thinking Little red riding hood from The brother's grimm but yea I don't know. I don't have the money to buy a costume either.

I want to go trick or treating but I also want to go to a party. It sucks Halloween is on a Monday I believe this year. Blah...

Does anybody have any good costume idea's that would be easy to make (I mean super easy haha)??

Man, I so wish we had Halloween here. I'd love to get all dressed up for it.
I think it's on a Tuesday, so if I go out I might just wear my fairy wings or something. Be a kinda fucked up fairy, and scare the little kids I see. I don't know how well it'd work though, kids love me. Even more when I'm wearing my wings. lol.
If we had Halloween, I'd really like to be something completely different to how I usually dress. Something more like how I'd like to dress all the time, but am too... shy to.

For Halloween this year, I actually get to hand out candy to the kiddies who go trick or treating! I'm so excited, before I moved I lived in the middle of no where and there was no trick or treating there at all. Ever :(

The choir at my new school is doing a set of Disney songs, and we all have to dress up as characters. Seniors get first pick :D I picked Snow White, because I'm not Asian, so I couldn't be Mulan, haha. My boyfriend's mother is making the costume for me, and I'll be wearing that for Halloween. :p

My own "costume" is really quite simple. I just wear my regular clothes but I put in my contacts and wear a hockey mask. *prang!* Instant "Jason Voorhees." I usually have my axe nearby on which I've splattered some Rustoleum Sunrise Gloss Red paint which even when dried looks like fresh blood (especially in blacklight and strobes). I've been "Jason" for three haunts running so the neighborhood has come to expect it. For that reason I may do something different this year. I may make a PVC-framed version of myself and dress it in my old clothes and put the hockey mask on it and have a different costume on inside the haunt itself. Sometimes the key to frightening people is throwing some surprises their way. :)

Okay this is what my cousin and I are planning this year. Basically our friend Sara is moving so this will be her last Halloween here:( I was thinking making a little haunted house thing. Like infront of our steps put a trap so people have to go through it. Then in the ground dig wholes and but a cardboard box in them and have my sister(Sasonie) in it then lightly sprinkle it with dirt so they cant see it. And we would have all our friends over and put them in varoius places and such. We could have spooky music too! lol.

I was gonna dress up as.....well I dont really know yet...last year I went as Amy. I bet you're all laughing at me....I would be too. I want to be all gothic..and thats not hard for me but be a vampire too. I could paint my face white and put fake blood around my mouth, and make it look like I was crying with my eyeliner. I could be a Gothic Vampire! Man, evboard makes me so smart!

I absolutely LOVE Halloween - it's honestly my favorite time of the year. Maybe it's goofy at my age, but I'm really into ghosts and the paranormal, etc. so needless to say I love this time of year. I love the chilly weather, the colored leaves blowing and falling all around you, the decorations, carving pumpkins with your significant other, and most of all - haunted houses and hayrides! In addition to that, there is nothing greater than snuggling up under a blanket on a cold night reading books on ghosts and paranormal. Yeah, I'm weird. But hey, that's what makes me, ME, right? :)

The last few Halloweens have been pretty crappy (last year all my plans fell through and the year before I got my heart broken) so I am hoping good things for this year. It's gonna be tough since it's the first Halloween that my mom isn't around but I plan on trying to spend alot of time with my friends, watching horror movies and maybe getting drunk once or twice lol. I may even throw a party....I dunno. I'm getting a Halloween tattoo next week so thats how I plan on starting my favorite time of the year. Let's hope it's a good one.

I think I'm going to have a Halloween party at my house this year. Ghost Stories, games, all that jazz.

We're also going to ShocktoberFest in Pennsylvania this year...should be fun. And there's this great haunted corn maze that they do every year just a few miles from me. I love haunted houses and all that stuff.

^^ A Savons that used to be near my house has now been turned into a costume store. I haven't checked it out yet, but maybe I could find a good deal. Either that, or I'm making my own costume. I'm going to be Lady Deathstrike.

It sucks because it seems like Halloween gets worse and worse every year. I see a lot less kids going trick or treating. I end up eating all the candy I buy for them. I hope that it'll be a good one this year. And I hope I don't go broke because of it.

Good luck with the costume. I'm so glad you're doing that because, at my haunt every year, there are several (not just a few) trick or treaters who show up with no costume, no mask, not even face paint. They show up for the candy and for no other reason. They don't get into the "spirit" (no pun intended) of the thing at all. I really get kinda torqued about it because I typically spend well over six hundred dollars a year (much more this year) trying to make my haunt the best in the neighborhood.

Every year for like the past 3 years I've been decorating the front porch to try and make it cool/scary looking. But it never really looks good to me because, we don't really have any good halloween stuff. All the good things are broken :( I've also been a vampire every year for 3 years. I'm going to try and get contacts this year for the costume (or is it just and excuse to get contacts? :D) One year I even died my hair black. Oh and my English teacher is taking the whole class to a Frankenstein play on Halloween! It's going to be really cool! :D

Going to a paint supply store today to get some heavy grade paper for making my own scene setters. Every Halloween I tell myself that I'm going to attend the Mansfield Reformatory. But, every single year, I back out. This place is really haunted, and I cannot tell you how many shows this place has been featured on television for. Not only is it a tourist attraction for its hauntings, but it was also the place for which the Shawshank Redemption was filmed at.

Mansfield, Ohio also has many other haunting spots.... like Mary Jane's (''Bloody Mary's'') grave yard. Apparently, she was burried near a very large tree, and the stree still remains today with her name etched within the tree.

For Halloween haunts and decorations try visiting a Big Lots store if you have one locally. For costume stuff, try the local Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift store. Even as much as I love Halloween there's no point spending too much money.

I was suppose to get my old Catholic School Uniform from home from my mom, and wear pigtails and give myself rosy cheeks..but thats not happening. He's gonna send Pics though. last year i was a Demonic Fairy. It was AWESOME!!! I had these Massive ass wings, and they hit everyone in the bar. Haa haa..how did i Not get in a fight you may ask? Because although they were big and annoying, they were the Coolest freakin wings EVER!

When you get "too old for trick-or-treat" you just have to find a good costume party to go to! Or even better - throw one of your own!

Once you're over 21, there's always bars with good Halloween/costume stuff. When I was in college, it was always great to go out to the bars in costume. I went once as Alex from Clockwork Orange, (and got VERY drunk).

Some friends of mine always a host a big medieval themed Halloween costume party. Two years ago I went as Connor MacLeod from Highlander. (I posted a pic from that one). Last year I went as the gravedigger from Hamlet - I carried around a shovel and Yorrik's skull. I'm still working on my costume for this year - I'll post photos later.

Gee! Glad I'M not married to you! hehe

I've been tinkering with the idea of doing a different costume for my home haunt. Every year I've been "Jason." The reason is simple, I'm a big guy and I usually wear work clothes so the hockey mask is pretty much the only thing I need for a costume. Also, since I'm usually working like mad to get the haunt ready for Halloween night I don't have to worry about messing up my costume. Still, though, I've been Jason enough times the "regulars" have come to expect it. I might build a PVC framework and cover it with some of my old clothes and put the hockey mask on it. That would make 'em think, however briefly, that it's me again. This time I'm thinking about maybe being in some kinda "Jack the Ripper" type costume. Just thoughts at this point. Still have way too much decorating and prop construction to do yet before I can worry about that.

So I have a problem. I realized that I cannot afford to buy a shirt for my pirate costume, as the cheapest one I could find was $40.

Does anyone know a good place where I could find something like that, besides eBay? I just need the shirt itself, not attached to a bodice or anything.

My group of friends and I are decorating a room for our church's Halloween party. We did the exact same thing last year. We always get room 13, and we decorate it really cool with strobe lights and all this stuff. I think we spent something like $200 dollars last year, but we are just going to reuse the stuff this time.
Also, I'm going trick-or-treating with them again this year. A few of us are all going to be Dead Gothic Private School Girls. We put the costumes together ourselves. It's going to be so cool!:D

Would you be able to get a men's dress shirt or old tux shirt from Goodwill? If you're handy enough with a sewing machine, you could probably make that work.

Or you could always go topless.......

For my costume, I've spent about $8 - for some thread and fabric. See, I'm kind of a packrat - the positive side of this is that I have a large supply of stuff to draw from for my costume. Combined with many years of SCA garb, and thankfully I can pull together a cool costume without breaking the bank. Pics when it's done - or possibly after the party.

Ok I have my costume, was planning on being a pirate and got it at Hot Topic, and I like it but the sleeves are a tad on the, odd side I guess. My boyfriend wants me to be a devil, I want to be a fairy or a vampire. I have the fairy wings with spider webs on them from last year, or I could go and buy horns. Then I just need to somehow alter the dress and take the sleeves off and decide what to be from there. Only one problem, I dont know how to take the sleeves off and if I do I might give people a show since the elastic goes around the front across the sleeves and across the back... i think I have an idea but I'll have to mess with it next week. :)

Gettin' close now. Everybody ready?

I had a minor mishap with one of the black light fixtures (dropped) but I tested 'em out yesterday and looks like they still work so everything's groovy. *whew* Got the new "walls" system pretty much perfected and won't have to worry about that anymore and will be easy to store for next year. "Stone" columns are almost finished. Started working on building the big coffin. Got a whole buncha candy to give out. Will be taking off work Monday and Tuesday to get everything finished and setup for the haunt Tuesday. No time for costume changes so will be "Jason" again this year.

Now if it would only stop f***in' RAINING around here!

So, as I posted before, some friends of mine host a medieval-themed costume party every year. Two years ago I went as Connor MacLeod, and last year I went as the gravedigger of Elsinore castle.

Anyway, a couple months ago a bunch of us got together to watch the old Errol Flynn "The Adventures of Robinhood". So I decided to go to the party as Errol Flynn's Robinhood.

Here's a frame from the film:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/robinhood_jw/robinhood/Flynn_robin_hood_sm.jpg

And here's my costume:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/robinhood_jw/robinhood/me_rh.jpg

A lot of people commented that they thought it was a cool costume, but a lot of people gave me a hard time about the tights too! (Which, I have to add - WERE FREAKING FREEZING! It was only about 30 degrees when I left the party. I was SOOOOO glad I had my wool coat in the car!)

In case you're wondering - yes, the bow, arrows, sword, and daggers are real weapons, not plastic. I'd never been that well armed in my life!

lietome1221
10-29-2006, 08:15 PM
Well, I had gone through many costume choices, but I couldnt find the pirate costume I wanted. All of the stores we went to were sold out. So I decided to use my cheap $10 cotsume that I wore last year, but this time add some "bloody" handprints to it, and add glow in the dark spray on it also.

The "blood" faded to pink within a few days, and the spray makes me gag.

So I decided to wear my suit that I had for my eighth grade graduation. Luckily, it still fits me!

The whole idea for the costume is being "late" for work. What I mean by that is, I will be dead and look like I put on the suit in a total rush; the tie will be crooked, buttons will be offset, shirt will be hanging out of my pants. Stuff like that.

I'll have some makeup that I used last year for my ghost costume that I will use for this one. I'll have dark shadows under my eyes and on my cheek bones to make me look gaunt.

Here's a link to the picture of how the upper part will look without the makeup an such. But be aware that I'm trying to look really creepy and serious so don't mind the "MySpace"-esque expression in the photo!

I agree. Halloween is always on the 31st and that's the way it always has been. Any messing around with the holiday for people's convenience is just "wrong" IMO.

Three years ago when I started this home haunt I had to run it for two days straight because Halloween itself fell on a Sunday. A lot of people, for some odd religious reason, thought it would be a good idea to do the trick or treating on Saturday instead of Sunday. I did notice a lot of those people who came Saturday were back again Sunday. Greedy bastages. :)

I wouldn't have thought that I'd attract black guys since I'm so white but...I guess I got proven wrong? haha. It was funny.

I love you guys. With a passion. That's brilliant! *wishes I was there*

And Heather was a white girl for a day. LOL! white chicks....

Yeah so I don't have any pictures of myself, so I won't bore you with random ones of my friends. They showed up at my house 20 minutes early, so I was running around like a lunatic trying to put on my mask without my hair getting in the way.

I seriously got like, 11 pounds of candy. It was amazing. I love trick or treating in my neighborhood. Sometimes you'll get a really drunk person just shoving fistfulls of candy at you. \m/

A couple of friends of mine dressed up as really girly faries with the Yankee logo on them, and they were the "Yankee Faries." BEST COSTUME OF THE NIGHT! They either got shunned by zealous Sox fans, or congradulated by some of the smarter fans who understood that they were dissing the Yankees. It was hilarious. Practically perfect in every way. :)

Another friend was trying to be a clown and had this fatsuit on, but hadn't put any makeup on. So we decided she was Humpy Dumpty.

And I fended off an attacking Catholic priest (Jacob) with my katana. Then I got kissed by a dog. What is it with me and getting sexually harrassed on Halloween?????

Beautiful.

Here are a few pics from my haunt. I had more fun this year than any Halloween before. Kudos to my neighbors for helping out and getting into the spirit of this.

I was definitely ready for Halloween this year.

A pic of my graveyard.

This kid couldn't tell if this neighbor was a person or a prop. Serves him right for not trick-or-treating in costume! When this guy moved toward him, the kid went screaming back into the street. The night was full of incidents like this. Was great!

I went as Amy two years ago, but it didn't work out so well because I have blondish brown hair and temporary black hair dye is crappy...

Maybe next year I'll go as Beth:p and then get my friends to be Amy and the guys.

I love the kissing the raven picture! And the Amy blowing off the fangirl one too. Haha.

Katya, you look so sexy as a pirate!
Though I maintain that Ninjas rule...;)

And Heather, you make a very good Amy Lee. It could be quite cool if we made a music video of every Evanescence fan in the world dressed up as Amy Lee and roaming about the streets...female AND male.

(Sorry, that was a random thought which could be taken as stalker-esque...maybe it could be the video for Snow White Queen?! )

Happy Halloween indeed! Y Feliz Samhain...

Love to you all,
Gail xxx

I'm not sure how us male fans would look dressed up like Amy O_o lol. Can I be Ben instead? :P

Here's a few more from this year's haunt. Sorry these pics really don't do it justice. The flash required from the camera pretty much negates all the lighting effects I spent so much time on. If you were to see this in person, though, you'd see everything bathed in blacklight with strobes strategically places to highlight certain props.

Like this one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/fraggenaught/Haunt06/reaper.jpg

Somebody lost their mask in the haunt. so I decided to put it on the skeleton. After all, it was just "hanging around." *dies from own pun*
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/fraggenaught/Haunt06/missing_mask.jpg

Speaking of hanging around, here are some more odds-n-ends from the haunt.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/fraggenaught/Haunt06/background_items.jpg

And THIS GUY is my next door neighbor. He rapidly became the real star of the show. He would stand stock still as if he were just another prop. He'd even let people poke at him and pull and whatever until they had it in their minds he was "fake" and just then he'd come to life on them. Scared even the adults with this one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/fraggenaught/Haunt06/Monster-with-axe.jpg

Again I have to stress how these pics don't give you a real idea what the haunt was like because of lighting but try to imagine all this in blacklight. I don't mean the cheapie little coated bulb blacklights either. I mean actual dedicated four-foot 40-watt flourescent blacklights. This was the most expensive single effect of the whole haunt at about $30 a bulb and there were four bulbs in two fixtures to give the whole area the effect. The strobes were well placed this year too. Overall this year's haunt was a quantum leap above last year's and am already planning on making some other improvements for next year's haunt.

Why, thank you. It was fun. Halloween is a good time...I like pretending to be other people. I wish I had had speakers to carry around with me.

Wow! That's an amazing costume. Who made it? (or at least customized it...) I wish I was as creative as that!
I didn't get to do anything for Halloween this year, sadly - even though there was what looked like a really cool 'Halloween Ball' on at my school. I had the dress rehearsal for the show I'm doing at the mo. I don't mind, though. The show opened last night and it was great. :D

I think I'm going to try and go as Amy Lee next year, and get a gorgeous black wig. Oh yes. (random thought no. 2) Or maybe I'll go as a butterfly! I've never gone as a butterfly...
