Steve was tragically killed when he was diving! He was stung by a sting ray and died. Sure we all made jokes about his enthusiaism but he did so much for wildlife and made us laugh. I am going to miss the crocodile hunter!
I'm not Aussie or anything, but that's really REALLY sad. :(
Poor Crocodile Hunter. :(

I'm not an Aussie either but that is so sad! :( I loved him...We used to watch Crocodile Hunter and Croc Files all the time! I didn't think anything like that would ever happen to him...I miss him already and I didn't even know him! It says somewhere that his wife doesn't even know yet. He has kids too.

RIP Steve Irwan.
I wasn't really a fan of Steves, but I'm so shocked and upset by the news. I really feel for Terri, Bindi and Bob.
This lady was on the radio earlier, she's their hairdresser. She was saying that Steve was such a family man. Bindi was in there the day before her birthday getting her hair cut, and she was saying that she was just going to have fun on her birthday, and something really special was going to happen. She said Steve was going to help her cut her birthday cake. OMG, I almost started crying. :( The poor little girl.

Poor Steve...you think he would've died in a mass shark feeding frenze or by a freak crocodile...but a stingray!
I appreciated steve more for his environmentalist views than his show...rip

My sister just saw it on CEEFAX. RIP man.
Damnit. :( I used to watch his shows all the time a couple of years ago, I loved what the guy used to do. He always had my admiration for always putting himself in danger in order for us to learn more about wildlife. It's a sad day for the world, I can't imagine how his family must feel.
RIP Steve Irwin.
I was in shock when I heard about this. It just didn't seem real that he could die from doing something he clearly loved and had lots of experience in handling and caring for dangerous wildlife.
RIP Steve Irwin. My condolences to his wife and kids

Like so many others I too was shocked. I didn't believe it when my friend told me, and even when she provded a link as proof. He just.. he's one of those people in which you forget that they can die just like everyone else. I don't know. I wasn't a huge fan, but a part of me is wishing that it was all just a big misunderstanding.
Prayers and best wishes to his family and loyal fans.

I just heard about this on another forum. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Especially killed by a stingray - probably one of the less dangerous animals he'd been around. I never really watched his show, but it's still saddening. I feel so bad for his family. R.I.P. Steve Erwin. :(

I caught the news on Steve Irwin this morning, it sounded at first like he had just been really, Really injured, and then the line "..the cause of his death.." appeared and it was just like "no way he's invincible!" It's pretty upsetting I frew up watching a lot of Steve Irwin and he's one of those people who is a real character to a lot of people.
Kids will still immitate his voice playfully despite his death I'm sure, he was an icon to a lot of children and people in general, wether you liked him or not.
I also at first thought it was a sting from a stingray that had killed him or somthing, but to hear he was actually stabbed though the heart by the stingray was even more unbeleivable, I had no idea they could do that.
He had a good life, but I can't help but feel for his kids. Especially his baby, at least they will have a Dad whose a legend.

Over the breakfast table this morning with my guests, we were talking about how ironic it was that he was killed by a 'usually' passive creature. One of my guests, had just finished a 'self help' video for people who are in debt and how to get out of debt. In the video he used the comparison of playing with fire you will get burned and he made reference to Steve and how he will get hurt one day because of the danger that he places himself in. Well, he was on the phone with his producer and they were talking about how fast they could remove the tapes from the stores. It was a sad breakfast this morning.
There is nothing that can be said that will ease the pain that is felt by those who loved his style.

RIP Steve Irwin
- You will truly be missed by all -
I can't believe he is gone... I thought nothing would be able to bring him down... I felt so sad after hearing the news... I suddenly remembered the days when me and my cousins would tape "Crocodile Hunter" when it was on, and make lots of funny home videos where I was pretending to be Steve Irwin and wrestle my 8 year old cousin's stuffed crocodile. We also named the stuffed crocodile, which he loves very much, "Crikey." He was truly one of my heroes during my childhood and even now... I have nothing but respect for him and the things he has done for nature, for mankind, and for his family...
I send my condolences to Terri, Bindi, and Bob.

Steve Erwin was the only one who's passion for wildlife could ever be compared to that of Jacques Cousteau. He was one of my heroes. Hopefully his friends, family, and fans will continue to remember his enthusiasm and passion for nature and will keep his legacy alive even though the man himself is gone. :(

I feel bad for his poor family, he was so young.
I was upset when I heard, mostly because it was on a celebrity gossip blog, and it was added as a short note after some stupid story about Kelly Osbourne. But in the end, I hope that it was quick and that he felt little pain.

I woke up this morning and heard my mom and sisters saying something about Steve Irwin dying, and I was just like, "What? He died?!" I couldn't believe it. Me and my sister were obsessed with "Crocodile Hunter" and "Croc Files" when we were younger. We thought he and his wife were like, the coolest people ever. I feel so bad for his wife and kids... his kids are so young. I remember seeing his daughter on the show when she was just a baby. :(
It pisses me off that so many people are saying he "asked for it." Granted, his death wasn't all that unexpected, but I wouldn't say he asked for it. The Jackass guys are asking for it; Steve Irwin was just doing his job.

This is unbelievably tragic and sad :( I didn't believe it at first. When I saw the headline I thought, it must be someone else, it can't be him...... I just couldn't believe it. I used to watch his show every week, his enthusiasm made me laugh but he was good at what he did and he was lucky to be doing something he truly loved. Out of all the dangerous things he did, a stingray is what killed him. And how ironic, he was filming a show called "The Ocean's Deadliest".
My heart goes out to his family and friends, especially his wife and 2 kids. I can't imagine what his wife must be going through right now.... and poor kids, losing their father at such a young age :(

Omg, I just read an article on CNN.com about Steve Irwin's death (http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/09/04/australia.irwin/index.html) and it is sooo shocking to hear what has happened to him. I mean, I used to joke around playfully when I was younger about how long it would take him before he was eaten by a crocodile or something, but I was never serious. I didn't really think that anything was going to happen to him. But a stingray?! I still remember watching his shows and how much more I learned to love reptiles because of him. He will be missed very much :(

Apparantly it was laying beneath the surface, in the sand and steve had accidently boxed it in whilst swimming over it, then the barb shot up. :0( I heard it was too unsafe for him to do work on his own doco that day (Ocean's deadliest) so he thought he would do some safer work in the shallow waters for his and bindi's doco. *sobs endlessly* Steve was so funny and entertaining. It was such an amazing sight to see him take on all of these ferocious animals and live to tell the tale each time. You knew that all of his risks were going to end his life eventually, but I had always thought that ending would come with a crocodile, alligator, or something more ferocious, not a stingray. I am going to miss him because he had such a great personality, he had a great love for animals, and he was never boring to watch on television. I send out all of my prayers to his family and friends. RIP Steve, you will be in our hearts forever.

I found out yesterday morning and didn't want to believe it. But today on Channel 1 (our news thing at school) they had Steve Irwin 1962-2006 and right then it hit me that he was never coming back and they a had an interview that he did with someone and I was crying. and all the kids in my class were laughing at his accent. it made me sooo mad. I mean how immature can you get??
I'm crying right now cause of the fact that his kids might not remember him, but he is immortal in a way he will always be on film. Rest in peace Steve Irwin! You taught us so much about wildlife!

I keep waiting for Snopes to be like "It's a HOAX! He's alive and well in Queensland, cuddling his kids and rassling a croc, as per usual!"
But no. :(
So do I. It has happened before.
I just keep hoping it's a cruel joke. :(
I'm in complete disbelief. I truly believed the crazy bastard was invincible, I think we all sort of did... *shakes head*
I was going to add an "at least he died doing something he truly loved", but I just don't see how that's a good thing.

As a fellow Aussie, born and raised, let me just say it fukin sux. He had the biggest heart, all he cared about was helping animals and loving his family. There have been so many "Tribute to Steve Irwin" programs on tv . Ive been to his zoo and its a really amazing place.
He will be missed dearly

I can't believe it. In the uk, his shows are usually on tv and he was just one of those guys you get used to seeing. From what i saw in his shows, he had an amazing, lively personality that I will definitely miss. When i was eightish, me and my friend were hooked on his shows, and we loved to do impressions of him. Real shame.

I feel, so so sorry for his children and his wife, I was on another site and there are a lot of americans ( no offence ot the wonderful, empathetic ones here!) saying how they lost respect for him after he 'dangled his baby in front of a croc', which is so not what happened I am not oging ot discuss it. I am about as UnAustralian as it gets when you are borna nd raised him, but he is someone I am proud to have represent me. He didn't ever bignote himself, and I am just now finding out about some of the little-know conservation work he did.
and I now feel shame that I was possibly the first one to make a tasteless joke about it (something about khaki shirt sales falling, at 5.34 Aust. time on Monday.not proud) However I do/id dhave a morbid feel os stingray, so this makes me feel justified.
ITs at times like this (hes been in so many dangerous siutations, he wasn't supposed to be filming there, only 17 recorded deaths worldwide) that make me think that htis is part of something bigger. And things like this always happen in 3s... 1 and 2 are down, which great Aussie is next :(

It's kinda ironic if you think about it.. being killed by a sting ray when there have only been 17 deaths in the world, and him being the 2nd in australia. Such a rare way to die, especially considering all the crazy stuff he did.
The first thing I thought of when I heard the news was his poor kids.. and then his wife.. and then finally it hit me that no longer will there be this crazy (delightfully i mean), passionate and educational man around. Although he didn't quite hit the nail on the head when it came to representing the manner of which aussies truely represent ourselves, i think it took a lot of courage to act and do what he did.
I give my condolenses and am truely saddened by the event.
[Has anybody heard people starting to make jokes already though? It's quite disgusting really.. there's one going around saying how he should've worn sunscreen to protect himself from the rays -.- I've always hated that boy who says that anyway.. *shakes fist* Hmm all I say really is that I bet the crocs are pissed that they didn't get to him first, I can just imagine this huge animal kingdom war happening now.. :P]

I can't say I was a humongous fan of his show, but I think people have learned something in the wake of his death.
His enthusiasm is contagious and I think that it's great that he made learning fun and cool.
I also respect him because he is who he is...he doesn't strike me as a phony TV personality. His pride and enthusiasm should be the same throughout as far as television is concerned.
For that, he will be sorely missed.

Did anyone else hear Germaine Greer's comments dissing Steve Irwin and think that she is way out of line? She has a right to her opinion, I will admit that, but I think it's a bit inappropriate to be saying stuff like that on tv so soon after he died.
To be honest she's always annoyed me - she's way way way too much of a radical feminist. She seems to hate all men in general, and that is so not what feminism is about.
RIP Steve.

Both my wife and I were very upset when we heard the news about Steve. We are both big fans, and have been to Australia zoo many times as its a 45 min drive from home. I think the best tribute we can do for Steve is to donate to the charity he set up for animals "wildlife warriors". he sunk most of his money into that charity, as well as buying up hectares upon hectares of land so as to leave them untouched for the animals that lived there. wildlife warriors will need support now more than ever after this tragic event.
here is there link,http://www.wildlifewarriors.org.au/ This is a way to help ensure Steve's legacy will stay alive. He will be missed in my home very much.

http://sg.yimg.com/xp/afp/20060906/18/2956037297.jpg
Photo: AFP SYDNEY (AFP) - Outspoken Australian feminist Germaine Greer has labelled "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin embarrassing and said she hoped her compatriot's death brought an end to exploitative wildlife programs.
Greer accused Irwin of provoking the stingray that killed him with a tail barb to the heart Monday, saying such behaviour was typical of the 44-year-old naturalist's documentaries.
"I really found the whole Steve Irwin phenomenon embarassing and I'm not the only person who did, or indeed the only Australian who did," the British-based Greer told Australia's Channel Nine television via satellite Wednesday.
Asked whether she felt out of touch with most Australians given the wave of mourning that has swept her homeland since his death, Greer replied: "I don't care what I'm being called, I hope I'm out of touch with what idiots are thinking."
Greer's remarks follow a column she wrote for Britain's Guardian newspaper in which she said the animal world had finally taken its revenge on Irwin.
They angered Peter Beattie, premier of Irwin's home state of Queensland, who described Greer's comments as "outrageous".
."That's just nonsense," Beattie said. "That is just garbage and it is insensitive, crazy and untrue."
The opposition Labor Party's foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd said Greer should have considered Irwin's wife and two children before speaking out.
"I think Germaine Greer should just stick a sock in it," he told reporters.
"You have got a grieving mother, you have got a couple of grieving young kids and a grieving nation and what do you get from Germaine Greer? You get a bucket load of politically correct pap - it's just nonsense.
"Steve Irwin was a nature conservationist, an animal conservationist and made a huge contribution to the preservation of wildlife worldwide.
"And what do we get from Germaine Greer? Some gratuitous, politically correct claptrap."
Greer shot to prominence in the early 1970s with her seminal feminist work "The Female Eunuch". Since then she has been largely based in Britain.
she is just a stupid bitch..

Germaine Greer is an absolute scrag.
What she wrote/said absolutely infuriated me and I've ranted about it a lot in the last few days.
What it comes down to is Why? Why she felt it necessary to attack a man that had just lost his life? Whether you agreed with the way he worked with animals or not, he wasn't some horrible, evil human being.
Just hearing all these stories about him from friends and people he's worked with, it's clear that Steve Irwin was a vibrant, loving, family-orientated bloke with a passion unmatched by many, and a huge heart.
So again, I ask why Germaine Greer felt she needed to crap all over a man, barely a day after he died a tragic death, while family, friends and ordinary people around the world were grieving the loss of a beloved man?
All I can say for the woman is, God help her if she tries to step foot in this country again.
"The heartless author went on to say she holds no sympathy for Irwin because she believes he antagonized the stingray that killed him.
Greer’s comments end there because she was late for a puppy-kicking convention across town." <-- lol

It is very sad that he died, I was shocked when I opened my internet explorer and saw it on the ntl world news headline. I could not believe it, I really liked Steve Irwin, he was a top bloke and obviously loved his animal friends. Wildlife has lost a man who cared for it and was not afraid to show people that he was.
I have seen many jokes and supposedly humorous pictures about his death and am sickened. The fact that anyone could make a joke about someone dying is horrible. I feel sorry for his family, he left a wife and 2 kids who grew up doing everything with their Dad. My thoughts go out to them, such a sad loss.

PETA sheds no crocodile tears for Steve Irwin
Some animal lovers aren’t shedding any crocodile tears for Steve Irwin.
The Aussie naturalist, known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed last week by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. But the folks at PETA are neither surprised nor upset by his passing.
“It comes as no shock at all that Steve Irwin should die provoking a dangerous animal,” PETA’s Dan Mathews tells The Scoop. “He made a career out of antagonizing frightened wild animals, which is a very dangerous message to send to kids.”
Does Irwin’s career as a naturalist impress the animal-rights group? Says Mathews: “If you compare him with a responsible conservationist like Jacques Cousteau, he looks like a cheap reality TV star.”

So sad... heartbreaking.. I really wanted to watch it but man it was hard to watch. She is (of course) devastated but so strong, she is a remarkable woman! And Steve was a great man, great father and great husband.

She said that little Bob said things like he wanted to be sick so he could be with his daddy in heaven. And she mentioned how he walked over to a motorcycle with a screwdriver in his hand and tried to fix it. When she asked him what he was doing, he said he was fixing it so that his daddy could ride it in heaven.
There's also a part where they take her outside so she can see all the flowers and gifts people left for Steve and his family. She's so overwhelmed by it all.

I'm for PETA and everything, but that's just...a shitty thing to say.
He amde a living trying to save animals, not to "antagonize" them or whatever.
He loves wildlife, he would NEVER do anything to hurt them.
-----
Me and my mom were watching TV and my brother came out from his room and was like "Steve Irwin died!" At first, I was thinking "No way! I bet he's joking." But that wasn't the case. Me and my mom walked into my brothers room and looked at his computer screen and it was talking about his deadly encounter with the sting ray.
I was just in complete and utter shock.
I always thought The Croc Hunter would live to grow old with Terri. And to see his kid get older and have children. I could see him definetly being a grand-parent.
I grew up watching "The Crocodile Hunter" with my brother. Laughing at his little jokes he made, his famous line "Crikey!" and "Isn't she a beauty!"

I do that now, since my wife had our daughter LOL. I have never cried over a celebrity, but watching the Steve Irwin tributes I did. He really meant a lot to us, more than we realized until he was gone. He is one of the greatest Icons of Australia.

*is speechless*
I truly can't believe some of the things people are willing to do for money.
...I also can't believe people fall for scams like that, especially when the scammers fail at spelling the name "Irwin" correctly.
